    INTRODUCTION

Brighton's GRAPHIC WAR is a new departure for QueenSpark Books.

For the first time in our 44-year history we have led a project that is entirely focused on developing the skills, and profiling the work, of young people.

Like many other organisations that focus on history and heritage, QueenSpark has struggled to fully engage young people in our projects - until recently, the majority of our participants and users have been over 40 years old.

However, this demographic has changed somewhat as a result of projects such as Brighton Trans*formed and our Mobile App pilot, and 2013's Brighton - The Graphic Novel, where almost all of the participants, and many purchasers of the book, were under 30.

In subsequent conversations with participants, teachers and readers, we learned that creative, graphic engagement with history can ‘reach further' down the age range; in recent years, the graphic novel has firmly established itself as a forum for communicating complex stories and concepts - particularly amongst those who struggle with understanding pure text - hence our aim to work with young people aged 15 - 25 in this project.

As QueenSpark has always been committed to promoting ‘lesser-heard voices', we did not want this project to be top-down; we wanted the young people to be involved fully in the creation of the stories, and to be able to support and mentor them in what we hope will be an enjoyable and fulfilling journey as writers and artists.

To this end, with the support of Collected Works, the first few months of the project was spent recruiting - via sessions in schools and libraries, and local advertising - young people who were willing to commit to an at times intensive, and long, process.

We analysed their skills and the support they would need from Writers’ and Artists’ Mentors Tim Pilcher and Paul Collicutt, and set about enabling them to access and use archives and resources such as:

    www.photosbrightonandhove.org.uk

    www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk

    letterintheattic.org

    The Keep

    Brighton & Hove Libraries.

They were also able to call on the unparalleled expertise of local historian Geoffrey Mead.

Throughout, we have been deeply impressed by the engagement and commitment shown by the participants. As a result, this book contains stories and artwork full of learning, ideas and skills, and we hope that each reader will come away saying ‘I never knew that!'.

QueenSpark would like to thank Children's Laureate Chris Riddell and Comics Laureate Dave Gibbons, who have so willingly given their support, time and creativity
