      HAND KNITTED SOCKS

      FOR MEN

      Socks, ribbed, cabled or argyle, are simple to make. Use any or all of these easy-to-follow directions, and watch him wear them and beam with pride.

      FOR WOMEN

      Hand knit socks are a must for style-right women. Knit them for yourself or for treasured presents. Socks by Beehive will bring admiring oh’s and all’s!

      FOR CHILDREN

      Small Fry crowd and teen-agers alike always need more socks. . . so knit them bright, knit them gay. Little feet patter better in hand knits by Beehive.

      Knit your way to his heart. Any man goes soft and romantic over the little woman who makes socks just for him. So knit them in his favorite style, his favorite color . . . and be sure the wool is the finest, imported straight from England

      What You Need:

      BEEHIVE NON-SHR1NK SOCK WOOL (1 oz. skeins), or

      BEEHIVE NON-SHRINK MOORLAND, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins).

      Slack-Length Socks:

      SIZES 10-10 1/2 or ll-11 1/2—2 skeins.

      SIZE 12-12 1/2—3 skeins.

      Regulation-Length Socks:

      3 skeins tor each size.

      ROYAL SOCIETY PLASTIC SOCK NEEDLES No. 1.

      GAUGE: 8 1/2 sts make 1 inch; 12 rnds make 1 inch. For important information on Gauge, see page 34.

      Cast on very loosely

      64 sts68 sts72 sts

      Divide sts on 3 needles, join, being careful not to twist sts, and work around tightly in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2 inches for Slack-Length Socks, or for 5 inches for Regulation-Length Socks. Next rnd: Knit around, decreasing evenly around to

      56 sts60 sts64 sts

      Work in stockinette st (knit each rnd) until piece measures in all 5 1/2 inches for Slack-Length Socks, or 11 1/2 inches for Regulation-Length Socks. Drop yarn, with a different color thread for heel marker, knit onto 1st needle (later to be heel sts)

      28 sts30 sts32 sts

      Drop marking thread. Divide the remaining sts between 2nd and 3rd needles for instep. Go back and pick up main yarn and, starting with heel needle, continue working in stockinette st as usual until piece measures from heel marker

      To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, k 1, slip 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to within 3 sts from end of needle, then k 2 together, k 1. On 2nd needle, k 1, slip 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to end of needle. On 3rd needle, knit to within 3 sts from end of needle, then k 2 together, k 1. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there remain

      Weave sts together or bind off, fold and sew.

      HEEL . . . Pull out heel marker; pick up sole sts on 1st needle. There are on 1st needle

      Divide remaining sts between 2nd and 3rd needles. There are on 2nd and 3rd needles

      Attach main yarn at beginning of 1st needle and knit 1 rnd, picking up 2 sts between 1st and 2nd needles (1 st on each needle) and 2 sts between 3rd and 1 st needles in same way. There are on needles

      Work 2 rnds straight, then shape heel as follows: 1st rnd: On 1st needle, k 1, slip 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to within 3 sts from end of needle, then k 2 together, k 1. On 2nd needle, k 1, slip 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass slipped st over knit st, knit to end of needle. On 3rd needle, knit to within 3 sts from end of needle, then k 2 together, k 1. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there remain

      No. 520 . . . Sizes 10 to 12 1/2

      What You Need:

      BEEHIVE NON-SHRINK MOORLAND, 4 Ply (1 oz. skeins).

      Slack-Length Socks:

      3 skeins of main color and about 5 yards each of 2 contrasting colors (to be referred to as A and B) for each size.

      Regulation-Length Socks:

      4 skeins of main color and about 7 yards each of 2 contrasting colors (to be referred to as A and B) for each size.

      ROYAL SOCIETY PLASTIC SOCK NEEDLES, 1 set each of No. 1 and No. 2.

      GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 10 rnds make 1 inch. For important information on Gauge, see page 34.

      With main color and No. 2 needles, cast on

      60 sts62 sts64 sts

      Divide sts on 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts. Change to No. 1 needles and work around in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 2 inches for Slack-Length Socks or 4 1/2 inches for Regulation-Length Socks, then knit 1 rnd, decreasing evenly around to 56 sts.

      Change to No. 2 needles and work pattern as follows: Always twist yarns around each other when changing colors to prevent
