    Chapter 1

Standing in the shadow of a tree, Cardan lay his weight against it. He ran his hand over the hilt of his sword and wondered when he’d need to pull it free. The ground under his feet trembled with an explosion. A plume of smoke grew from the spot where it had gone off and a dead player began to flicker out of existence. His head turned on hearing a clash of metal followed by a scream. Watching the second one disappear, he wondered if either player would be back to re-join the battle. Hearing a twig crack, he turned and found Tomfer coming up slowly on his right-hand side. He nodded and returned to watch the fight on the grassy plain continue.

Sir, which side do we attack?

Cardan heard the question and thought the player had read his mind.

    Sir, they’ve got teleportation bands.

Cardan watched Bucktooth turn to the player beside him.

Are you going to give a running commentary on everything I’m looking at?

    No, Sir. Sorry, Sir.

Cardan looked over at Tomfer who was doing his best to stifle a giggle and gave him a look. That was the last thing Bucktooth would want to hear. Seeing the player get control of himself, he turned back to the battle. Which one of them had Grober? Was he even alive? Thoughts of respawning entered his mind. All the distance they’d travelled, and they hadn’t set up any beds yet. Would they travel all the way back to Portal Police headquarters, or had they gone too far even for that? And if they didn’t, what then? Would they leave Minecraft and never be able to come back? He watched a player teleport behind another and stab them in the back. A shiver went up his spine. Looking at Bucktooth’s tense body language, he didn’t know if it was the right time to bring that problem to his attention.

    Bucktooth turned to them.

As you can see, we’ve turned up to a pretty mess. Our orders are to find Grober, or find out what happened to him. He looked back over his shoulder at a player’s death scream. Although part of me is tempted to disobey those orders. He looked at his feet for a moment. But as you know this isn’t what we’re here to do. For now, all we’ll do is sit tight and watch the show. Maybe when this mess gets cleared up, we’ll be able to move out and find out where-

    Sir?

Bucktooth looked back at the player who’d given him a running commentary earlier and gave him a look.

No, Sir. It’s not that, it’s Grober.

What? Bucktooth ran to his side. Where is he? Is he a hostage?

Cardan ran behind Bucktooth and followed the direction the player’s finger was pointing. He was right. Charging toward a group of players, a lone Portal Police uniform could be seen in the group. What’s he doing? Cardan heard the comment behind him and had the same thought. He’d only been gone a few days and already he was deep in someone else’s fight.

We’ll I’ll be. Bucktooth turned to the group. Maggots, we’ve got our man and our enemy. He played with the teleportation band on his wrist for a moment and looked up. Everyone turn on your bands. On my mark, we all jump to Grober’s location. Smirking to himself, he looked at the group of players. Can’t wait to see the look on his face when we all show up. —Alright, we’ll countdown from ten.

Looking from his band to the fight, Cardan estimated the distance to where Grober was. It looked like a one jump affair. Even if it wasn’t Bucktooth’s would override everyone’s band and pull them all to him.

    Ten-nine-eight-

    Cardan?

Cardan turned and found Tomfer at his side.

    What?

    My band, it’s not working.

    What?

    Six-five-

    My band it’s not working.

Cardan grabbed Tomfer’s wrist. This had to be another prank he was pulling. Taking the players arm, he held it closer to his face. He was right. The display was totally blank.

    Five-four-

He tapped the screen. What did you do to it?

    Nothing. Honest.

    Three-two-

Two seconds to make a decision. He looked at Tomfer. He knew he couldn’t jump with the others and leave him behind. Unless they jumped as a pair? He’d done it with Grober before, but the bands distance was always shortened because of it. What if they ended up on their own in a battle somewhere else? Their enemy mightn’t give them the time or chance to jump again.

    One.

Cardan tapped the band on his arm and closed his eyes. Bucktooth was going to kill the two of them for this.

    Jump!

The air changed around him. They were gone. Ronma’s smirking face appeared in his mind mouthing the word ‘coward’ to him. Cowards. That’s what they’d be called. ‘Chickened out of the fight.’ Opening his eyes, he found Tomfer shrugging his shoulders.

I swear, Cardan, I didn’t do anything to it.

Ignoring the player, he watched the first of the Portal Police reappearing and getting stuck into the battle. Turning back, he dragged a hand down his face. Bucktooth was going to kill them. Nice one, Tomfer.

I swear; I didn’t do anything. He held out his wrist and wiggled it. See? It’s not working. He stabbed the band again with a finger. They must have given me a broken one. I swear I didn’t do a thing. Tomfer looked up and shook his head. I’m sorry for getting you into trouble, Cardan-

Wait! It was a long shot, but maybe he was right. Cardan looked at his own teleportation device. He’d never heard of one breaking before. Unless. Who gave you that band?

    What?

    Who gave you that band?

I dunno, I wasn’t paying much attention. Tomfer looked upwards as if thinking. Wait—those guys.

Who? The ones back at HQ?

Yeah. The ones that you thought were miffed at me for my ‘melting joke’. Them.

It was Mes. He had to be behind it. There were too many coincidences. Tomfer getting picked, the grin on his face, it all made sense now. Turning back to where the Portal Police had gone, he realized he couldn’t see them anymore. Bad enough Mes had tried to get Tomfer in trouble, now Bucktooth was down to eighteen players to try to rescue Grober with. If they got back, he was going to make sure Mes paid for what he did. He grabbed Tomfer’s arm. We’re going to jump with one band.

    What?

I’ve done it before with Grober. We won’t get all the way there, but it’s better than standing here doing nothing. Are you ready?

    Are you sure?

No. Switching his device back on, Cardan looked back to the battle and tried to find a good clearing to jump to. A new wave of players in bright armour began racing into the fight. It looked like the battle was going their enemy’s way now. Holding his finger over the jump button, he held it and waited. What were they going to do?
