About this ebook

Did she make love to a zombie?

How could that even be possible?

If she did, could she bear a zombie baby?

This wasn’t how it was when she was younger. She would watch zombie movies with her dad. Her dad always laughed and told her if anyone couldn’t escape from a zombie, they deserved to die.

It was true. Susan always found it comical when people would run away at break neck speed and the camera would show zombies with their arms flailing about and barely able to walk. The zombies would groan and it was impossible to figure out what they were saying.

The victim would run and continue to look behind them and, when they inevitably fell, the zombie would somehow be there to attack.

But you knew immediately when you saw a zombie what it was.

That’s the way it should be. You could look and tell immediately who was a zombie. A white pale face with blood dripping from their mouth and a limp that would make Chester from the old Gunsmoke show proud was a dead giveaway.

What the hell changed? Now that she knew they were real, she wondered why they couldn’t just be like the zombies of old?

And why did they want her dead?

There was no doubt in her mind that if they were, she wouldn’t have fallen in love with one of them and certainly would not have had sex with him.

Sure, zombies were fictional. But now that she knew they were real, she wondered why they couldn’t just be like the zombies of old?

There was no doubt in her mind that if they were, she wouldn’t have fallen in love with one of them and certainly would not have had sex with him.

Who the hell falls in love with a zombie?

    Susan?

Susan glanced up to find a large attractive man with a movie star grin hovering over her.

Do I know you? she asked.

There was no doubt in her mind that she wanted to know him. Men who looked like him didn’t exactly populate the town.

    Are you Susan Hunt?

Yes. I’m sorry to be rude but I don’t recognize you.

She was trying to scan through her memory bank. How do you forget someone who looks like that?

I’m Blake Walker. You probably don’t remember me. We went to school together.

No freaking way! She kind of remembered Blake but he wasn’t a hunk back then. Of course that was a long time ago. He definitely was hot now. Her expression must have told him as much.

I was on the dorky side in high school.

Hi, Blake, she said, extending her hand.

This was embarrassing. She had to recover.

I remember you now. I don’t remember you as being a dork though.

Right. He had been as dorky as they come.

    You’re being kind.

    I’m so sorry I didn’t recognize you.

How would he have remembered her? She wore braces in high school and had been on the shy side. All that changed when she took charge of her life with vigorous exercise and better eating. But that was now. How could he remember her from back then?

That’s alright, he said. I was tall and lanky back then. My mom had me wearing those thick glasses. I worked hard to change my image.

Whatever he did he should bottle it.

Don’t feel bad. I wasn’t exactly a beauty queen back then. . . I mean not that I am now.

That was embarrassing. She hoped she didn’t sound stuck up.

You look very attractive to me, he said.

    Awkward.

So, Blake, if I remember correctly, you left town a few years back? I don’t know why I remember . . .

Oh crap. Now she remembered. He was accused of killing his wife. They hauled his ass to prison. He was on death row. It figures. A guy who looks like that never just walked up to her. Time to exit.

I don’t remember why you left, she lied.

She glanced at her watch in an attempt to appear to be in a rush. Actually she suddenly was.

Anyway, I have to finish shopping. I hate for the milk to go bad.

She was fumbling her words. But she was telling him the truth about the milk. Milk had to stay refrigerated. It was one of her pet peeves. The problem was she always got the milk last so it wouldn’t have time to lose its chill. There wasn’t any in her cart yet. If he noticed he pretended not to.

That’s OK. I understand. At the risk of being forward, do you think maybe I can take you to dinner some evening?

Sure. That would be a great evening. We could discuss how one goes about butchering their wife. It might make for an interesting conversation.

Thanks but I’m seeing someone. But hey, I’m sure we’ll see each other sometime around town. It was nice to see you again, Blake.

He looked disappointed. But there was something in his eyes. She couldn’t put her finger on it. Yes she could. His eyes looked sad. Like he was carrying a huge burden. Whatever. People who kill their spouses probably do and should live with the burden.

The pleasure was all mine, he said.

    You bet it was.

    He handed her a card.

If you ever change your mind, give me a call. My offer is an open offer.

    He held his hands up.

I don’t mean anything by that. I mean you being taken and all.

Don’t worry about it. I’ll keep your offer in mind. Have a good day.

Sure. If she ever needed someone to butcher her, he’d be the first one she’d call.

But how could he be free if he had slaughtered his wife? She recalled he had burned her body as well. There was no way he would have gotten a get out of jail free card if he’d done what he was accused of.

Maybe there was more to this than she thought. Or maybe she was letting her attraction to him cloud her judgment. She headed to the dairy aisle and picked up some
