Planning for Employment - ARC Counselling

    Introduction

Preparing for a new job takes many steps. There is finding the right job, applying for the position, taking an interview (or two), and then starting work. Sometimes we apply for positions we don’t end up getting, and that means starting all over again. This guide can help you prepare for a new job and get the best outcome. Obviously, it is a guide only, and we cannot predict any unforeseeable circumstances that may change the outcome. That is something only you can do, to not only overcome, but also adapt to. In doing so, we will show you how to compose an exceptional resume that showcases your skills, qualifications, work experience and employment history. We will help you acquire skills to write to criteria, and we will help you foster ways of devising excellent answers to interview questions.

For some people applying for a job is terrifying. They fear every step of the process; from submitting a resume, to sitting an interview or even pre-start job nerves. This guide will help you be able to help you every step of the way, and will aid you to develop strategies to apply for a range of different positions and conquer job interviews. This process is nerve-racking for everyone, especially when they really want to get that dream job, but often the most successful candidate is the one that is organised, well prepared and has confidence. Sometimes, confidence stems from being organised and well prepared, so each aspect of applying for a job can help or hinder every step of the process (depends on how organised you are). In light of that, it is important to be able to link each step of the process to ensure you are clear about what you are trying to convey to your prospective employer, but also, to ensure you are clear about how you fit into the process and what you are trying to achieve.

We will, in this guide, go through many steps and talk you through how to develop your skills, put your best foot forward, and exude confidence. Organising yourself for a job can mean different things to different people. For some people it is a promotion, for others, a way out of long term unemployment, or for others again, starting a new chapter in their lives. In each case, it is important to isolate the reasons you are seeking this new opportunity and use that to form the approach you will take. After all, the job seeking process is as individual as you. But again, we will look at all this in the following pages of our concise job preparation guide. It is essential to be able to examine what you hope to achieve from your new job, and be able to convey this succinctly to your prospective employer.

Essentially this guide is about getting you to understand the processes of getting a job. I will not go into lengthy explanations about why things are good or not. Or why things will, or won’t, be good if you do them. I’m certain you already know this. And I am certain you know how to adapt ideas and processes into your own circumstances. For instance, it would be pointless of me to discuss at length the benefits of work. You already know that holding a fulfilling job is good for your life on many levels; financially, emotionally, socially, spiritually, and personally. You already know that going to work helps you to pay the bills, pay your rent, care for your children and buy some things you need or like. You already know that going to work helps you to expand your social life and meet new people. You already know that going to work can change the course of your life in positive ways, and can encourage you to continue to strive for new opportunities and dream bigger. So I won’t waste a moment longer telling you things you already know. What I know is that because you are reading this you already have the
