      Overview of Easter

      Easter is a holiday of the Resurrection of Christ.

      A major Christian celebration takes place in memory of sufferings, martyr death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

      The Dictionary describes Easter as: An annual Christian festival in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

      Easter is observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox. This is calculated according to tables based in Western churches on the Gregorian calendar and in Orthodox churches on the Julian calendar.

      Easter Sunday, also called Easter Day, is the day on which this festival is celebrated, between Good Friday and Easter Monday. Easter is a holiday of the Resurrection of Christ and is a major Christian celebration in memory of sufferings, martyr death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

      Some Christians symbolically link the cracking open of Easter eggs with the empty tomb of Jesus. In the Orthodox churches, Easter eggs are blessed by the priest at the end of the Paschal Vigil, the equivalent of Holy Saturday, and distributed to the faithful. The egg is seen by followers of Christianity as a symbol of resurrection and while dormant it holds a new life.

      In Poland’s Roman Catholic Church, the święconka is celebrated on Holy Saturday. This is the blessing of decorative baskets with Easter eggs and other symbolic foods. In some traditions the Easter egg is extended to the deceased so on either the second Monday or Tuesday of Pascha, after a memorial service people bring blessed eggs to the cemetery and bring the joyous paschal greeting, ‘Christ has risen’, to their beloved departed.
