      ETYMOLOGY:

      The name Aiden (pronounced AY-den) is a variant of Aidan (pronounced AY-dan) which is the anglicized form of Aedan (Old Irish), Aedan is in turn derived from the Irish Gaelic name Aodhan which means warmth, fiery or little fire. The name originates from the Irish Gaelic aodh which means fire, Aodh is also the name of a Celtic sun god.

      The name is traditionally masculine but can occasionally be seen used for girls, the feminine version of the name is Eithne however this is very rare in usage.

      ORIGIN & HISTORY:

      Although there are no known Saints with the name Aiden, the variation Aidan can be found as a Saint's name in the Catholic faith; St. Aidan of Ferns, a missionary and first bishop of Ferns who came to be called Mogue which means the beloved Aidan and St. Aidan of Lindisfarne(the apostle of Northumbria), who founded a major monastery at Lindisfarne. St. Aidan of Lindisfarne, whose death is recorded as the 31st of August 651, is one of the earliest instances of the name on record.

      POPULARITY:

      Since the Victorian times the name Aiden has dwindled in popularity but has been experiencing a steady rise since the mid nineties and in 2006 Aiden ranked as the 30th most popular name for new born baby boys in the US.

      In the statistics for England and Wales Aidan ranked as the 79th most popular name for baby boys, the variant Aiden however did not make the top hundred listing.

      Aiden is a popular name in Malta, ranking as the 9th most popular name for new born baby boys in 2004.

      Although Aiden isn't found commonly as a place name or as the name of any major edifice the variant Aidan, which has been more commonly used throughout history, features as a place name for landmarks, schools and churches all over the world.

      Aiden is the name of an American alternative rock band, they chose Aiden as their band name as it is the name of a little boy in the film, The Ring.

      Aiden James is a Philadelphia singer songwriter in the folk / rock genre.

      Aiden McGeady, (born April 4th 1986) is a professional footballer currently playing for Celtic.

      Aiden Byrne is a British chef famed for having been the youngest chef ever to be awarded a Michelin star (at the age of just twenty two), he was featured in the 2007 BBC Two series Food Poker'.

      ETYMOLOGY:

      The name Alex is a diminutive form of the masculine name Alexander taken from the Greek Alexandros defender of men, this name is derived from alexein which means defend or protect and Andros meaning man.

      Alex is also a short form for the female variant of the name, Alexandria, this short form serves for both genders.

      ORIGIN & HISTORY:

      First recorded usage of the name is the Greek commander Alexander the Great (born 356 BC) however it is worth noting that he was also known as Alexander the third, indicating usage of the name previous to this point meaning that the name is well over two thousand years old.

      One of the first notable uses of the name in Britain was the Scottish king, King Alexander the First (born circa 1078) whose parents named him for Pope Alexander the Second.

      The Catholic faith lists over 40 Saints with the name Alexander and a few saints are listed bearing female versions of this name.

      POPULARITY:

      Alex as a male name entered the top hundred most popular names for newborn baby boys in the United States in the 1980s and has since maintained a strong level of popularity.
