The name Aiden (pronounced AY-den) is a variant of Aidan (pronounced AY-dan) which is the anglicized form of Aedan (Old Irish), Aedan is in turn derived from the Irish Gaelic name Aodhan which means warmth

The name is traditionally masculine but can occasionally be seen used for girls, the feminine version of the name is Eithne however this is very rare in usage.

Although there are no known Saints with the name Aiden, the variation Aidan can be found as a Saint's name in the Catholic faith; St. Aidan of Ferns, a missionary and first bishop of Ferns who came to be called Mogue
which means the beloved Aidan
and St. Aidan of Lindisfarne(the apostle of Northumbria), who founded a major monastery at Lindisfarne. St. Aidan of Lindisfarne, whose death is recorded as the 31st of August 651, is one of the earliest instances of the name on record.
