Under The Woodlands
CHAPTER ONE
JonEthan Aubert was born in France, having been told numerous times by his French and German American Grandmothers, Elsa Aubert and Ute Zweig, respectively. His parents passed away from a car accident while they all were vacationing in Switzerland enjoying views from the Alps. Grandmere Aubert would tell him to call Grandmere Zweig ‘Auntie Mame’. He knew the old family joke, having seen both old movies, starring Rosalind Russell and the funny redhead, Lucy Ball, that Grandma Z watched the movie and recited each line with perfection from each character. Sometimes the two Grandmeres and their purple-hatted friends would dress up as characters from the movie and have props, like skates, long cigarette holders, bright orange and red lipsticks that made him giggle and funny sounding drinks.
‘Old people sure are weird’, he thought.
He was nine years old and missed his mom and dad, mere and pere, thank you, very much. His unusual name came from his Grandperes, Jon Aubert and Ethan Zweig. They died centuries ago, he thought. He had seen pictures of them, standing stiff, wearing uncomfortable brown clothes (he was told they wore camel hair suits-and couldn’t believe anyone wanted to wear the camels’ ugly clothes), slicked back black hair, much like his and scowled back at him.
GO, as he liked to be called, from his initials and last name-JE Au, should have been Joe, but he didn’t like the soft sounding nickname
and preferred the harder ‘G’ for GO, was a typical rambunctious nine year old boy, always on the go, who liked mud puddles, frogs and toads, along with his teddy bear, Ljosalfar, and stuffed rabbit, Landvatter-so named from mythological fairy tales his Mere used to read to him at bedtime. He loved his Grandmeres but they didn’t have the energy to raise a ‘lightning bug’ like him. He was always zipping hither and yon, across the acreage, into the small Washington State town where everyone knew his Grandmeres, who shared the big, old Victorian home on the edge of the forest.
"Go burn off that energy in the woods’ they would say.
When he was introduced to them when he was a smaller boy, he called them Grand Mirrors, having misunderstood the French term. Everyone was amused by the mistake and now understood why the boy kept staring at them-first with one eye, then the other. He had seen the famous Hall of Mirrors on another Family outing and didn’t think the two older women resembled anything that fancy.
Oftentimes he would run errands down the few miles from the edge of the forest where his big house with the round bedroom was to town, called Periwinkle, which really consisted of a general store, a small post office and a community store with a smattering of other buildings he didn't know what they did. Everyone was kind and thoughtful, though he had seen some mean people a time or two who were
