Chapter One
THIS WAS THE PART THAT she’d grown to hate most about her job. When she had to go into that room, face those women and lie to them, all while pretending to comfort them through their pain.
Lena could hear the muffled sounds of voices behind the door. She recognized it as the excited chatter of expectant parents waiting to see the image of their tiny baby bouncing around on the ultrasound screen. She just didn’t understand why it had to be this couple again. Danielle and Ethan Moore had been through this four years ago and were supposed to be exempt.
Lena drew in a deep breath, gave two quick raps on the door as a courtesy knock, and waited until Danielle called out, Come in.
The corners of Lena’s mouth lifted in a forced smile as she entered and made her way to the ultrasound imaging machine.
So, how are you feeling today, Mrs. Moore? Any problems?
No, none
, Danielle said, Just excited to look at this little one again. And hoping everything’s okay.
Mmm-hmm. If you lie back and lift your shirt, we can get started.
Lena flipped the light off, darkening the room so that only the dim glow from the screen of the ultrasound instrument filled the room. Lena lifted a bottle of ultrasound gel from the warmer mounted on the wall. She flipped the top open and squeezed, the gel oozing out as she made circles on Danielle’s rounded abdomen.
Ethan shuffled his feet, getting more comfortable, as he stood next to his wife. He squeezed her hand in his own. He turned to ask Lena, So, how long before we know the sex?
Still a bit longer. That’s usually not until you’re nearly halfway through the pregnancy, and it looks like you guys are only at about 10 weeks right now.
Lena turned her back to them, and reached for the transducer probe. With her other hand, in a fast and discreet movement, she pressed a tiny button on the side of the instrument. She turned back to face them. They hadn’t noticed. Lena was so good at it now, that no one ever noticed.
Lena ran the probe over Danielle’s jellied belly, and looked at the screen behind her. Danielle and Ethan watched the monitor, their nerves on edge as they stared at the dark screen.
What’s wrong, why is nothing there?
Danielle asked.
Lena maneuvered the white probe around, searching, until she’d found what they were all waiting to see.
