I learned many tools of writing during the years watching directors like Mike Nichols and actors including Harrison Ford, Anthony Hopkins, and Billy Crystal. And would you believe, I was Geraldine Ferraro’s stand– in leg model, my first job giving me entrée into all the Unions needed to work. When the sweet time ended, I began another career and creative juices flowed.”You can reach Charmaine athttp://authorCharmaineGordon.wordpress.comAnd on her FB page http://www.facebook.com/charmaine.gordon

    Meet the Author

    Dedication

Somehow Sally Kirkwood, fictional reporter said to me, yes characters talk to the author, I’ve changed since the first book Housebroken where we moved to River’s Edge so how about a new take. So Sally spreads her wings in a delightful way in this new story.

I dedicate this book to all middle aged women who begin again with a beautiful exciting life ahead. Or just change their path for something more interesting. Bless us all, the long, the short and the tall.

    Acknowledgement

To Kimberlee Williams who said yes to me when I sent her my first book, To Be Continued. Because she believed in me, I believed in me.

    Chapter 1

Early in the morning one summer day, the phone rang in the Atwood’s home. Deep asleep, a groggy Sally reached for Steve who always got up early. Let him stop the damn phone from ringing. No Steve. She heard the truck roar in the driveway and he was gone for the day. She rolled over snuggled under the duvet and again the phone began to ring. Sally picked it up.

Sally? Is this Sally? It’s Teresa from the Silver Belles Club. My daughter’s gone. Close to hysteria, the woman’s voice cracked.

Teresa. She cleared her mind. Teresa who had some health issues last year. Yeah. A quick glance at the clock showed 7:30. Sally crawled out of bed. What do you mean your daughter’s gone? I didn’t even know you have a daughter. I’ll be right over. Always speedy in an emergency, Sally pulled on jeans, a shirt and tied on sneakers.

Sally Atwood, reporter extraordinaire in River’s Edge, ran three blocks from her home to knock on Teresa Maxwell’s door. A wan red eyed thin woman opened the door to fall into Sally’s arms.

Jack’s out of town. Misty was visiting for a few days when suddenly she got a bunch of calls, dressed, packed and when I went shopping for dinner, she left. Without a word.

Let’s sit for a minute to sort this out. How old is she?

She’s just a kid, eighteen. She graduated way ahead of herself dancing, singing, and acting classes at Emerson in Boston. Her goal is to be a super star, a triple threat she calls it, excellent in all that’s needed for musicals and her drama skills are above average so Misty is confidence personified for audition. Now she’s ready to hit Broadway with all her skills intact. Her voice broke. Sally recalled Teresa’s beautiful voice accompanied by her own piano playing. So much talent in the family.

Listen to me. Does she have a car?

Oh sure. A graduation gift, a Toyota."

So she drove and she must have money to park and get a room and eat and ...

And everything she needs monetarily speaking. Even a credit card but the worst thing is she didn’t leave a note as to where she is and she’s only eighteen, really a baby. My baby girl. Teresa wailed. New York is a scary place. Misty is smart, clever but not worldly. Not yet.

    Friends names?

Not too many because it’s show business she’s interested in. And the girls are competitive. She does have a boyfriend. He’s on standby while she gets a break.

Sally sat back after taking notes. "It’s not a job for the police right now
