Chapter one: An energized career
I believe that it is possible for every person to have a career that energizes them. If we struggle to get motivated to work in our career, we have the problem the wrong way around. Our work should already be energizing us. It may be that the environment in which we are doing the work is taking away from that internal motivation we have for the work itself, but we shouldn’t let the environment we are presently in cloud the issue. Our work has the potential to motivate and inspire us. How do we build a career that energizes us?
First of all we need to believe that it is possible to have a career that utilizes our abilities and passions. We then need to discover our unique make-up and begin to pursue roles that are aligned with our strengths. We also need to operate in our career in a way that harnesses our inner drive.
This book will help you to discover, be passionate about and utilize your strengths in your career.
To build an energized career, we need to build on four essential building blocks.
Firstly, we should establish what our strengths actually are. Every person has the ability to be world class at something. Every person has passions for specific tasks, roles and jobs. A strength is not only something we have superior ability in, but also something that we also have an interest or passion about.
Secondly, we should continually consider how we are adding value or excellence by what we are doing. We may have strengths, but how are these strengths benefitting people and the world around us.
Thirdly, we should be continually learning about the world, our industry and any other topic that takes our interest. The more we learn, the more opportunities we can take that utilize our strengths.
Finally, we should continually learn about what makes other people tick. There are many factors that contribute to diversity and the more we can understand, the more energized our life and career will be.
Chapter two: Embracing your strengths
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
Confucious
The preceding quote is often quoted for good reason. It is recognition that there are jobs that people love (and hate) and that it is possible (and achievable) to so enjoy what you do that you do not consider it to be work.
At this stage do not consider how much money you think you can make if you pursue your strengths. The truth is that you have a far greater likelihood of sustained financial success if you are operating in your strengths and
