Introduction
I want to thank you and congratulate you for downloading, "DIY Pantry: Canning and Preserving Basics for Sustainable Living."
As every homesteading and farming family knows, there is something special about filling the plates on your dinner table with food you grew and raised yourself. Learning to preserve the food you grow, raise, catch, hunt, or gather, can extend that sense of accomplishment all year round.
Food preservation is one of the most basic skills any homesteading family can have. It is a part of living off the land and takes us back to the way our ancestors lived, when families still relied on what they could can, smoke, dry, dehydrate, and store to get them through the winter.
Learning to preserve your own food will do more than just help you fill your pantry. It cuts down on food costs, extends the harvest, increases your self-reliance, and reduces waste. It lets you reap the benefits of all your hard work over a longer timeframe. It is more sustainable and makes the best possible use of resources. With so many great reasons to learn basic food preservation, I simply don’t know what anyone would choose not to do it.
This book provides an in-depth look at the four main ways homesteading families can begin preserving their own food. It outlines the benefits to homesteaders of learning and expanding these skills and offers practical advice on how you can use home food preservation to increase the sustainability and self-reliance of your
