About this ebook

One Daring Widow

In the social whirl of Victorian England, Elizabeth Chudderley is at the top of every guest list, the life of every party, and the belle of every ball. But her friends and admirers would be stunned to know the truth: that the merriest widow in London is also the loneliest. Behind the gaiety and smiles lies a secret longing—for something, or someone, to whisk her away. . . .

One Reluctant Suitor

Raised in scandal, Lord Michael de Grey is convinced that love is a losing gamble—and seduction the only game worth playing. But when duty threatens to trump everything he desires, the only way out is marriage to a woman of his brother’s choosing. Elizabeth Chudderley is delightful, delicious—and distressingly attractive. With such a captivating opponent, Michael isn’t quite sure who is winning the game. How can such passionate players negotiate a marriage of necessity— when their hearts have needs of their own?

Meredith Duran

Meredith Duran is the USA TODAY bestselling author of thirteen novels. She blames Anne Boleyn for sparking her lifelong obsession with British history (and for convincing her that princely love is no prize if it doesn’t come with a happily-ever-after). She enjoys collecting old etiquette manuals, guidebooks to nineteenth-century London, and travelogues by intrepid Victorian women.

This latest offering by Meredith Duran focuses on Elizabeth Chudderly, a side character from two of her earlier works. Unfortunately, I found it very hard to warm to Elizabeth in this book- she drinks too much and is often too vapid for sympathy. As the book unfolds, she does get more palatable, but I just never really found myself pulling for her. I also think that there wasn't much background tension moving the romance forward which is a marked contrast to other Duran books. In the end, even a mediocre Meredith Duran is a cut above many of the offerings in this genre, but it was nevertheless disappointing given the high quality of her earlier books.

With this full length novel the author officially starts her Rules for the Reckless series.

This story leaves me conflicted between liking it and loving it. I think if I liked the heroine this would have been a no brainer and I would have loved it more. However, I had some issues with the heroines character, although I must admit it that her complexity probably made this story better.

On the other hand, our hero was someone who despite making me question some of his actions, I kind of liked. Somewhat slow at the start, the pace picks up with the plot and I have to say, I did like it.

*I took the liberty in correcting the book blurb and writing the correct setting for this story. The original blurb says “Regency England”, but it is a Victorian, since this is set around 1880’s.

This book was…interesting. I liked that we had a heroine who was very human: she made a lot of mistakes & dabbled too much with alcohol, but she had a good heart, and wanted to do well by her servants, tenants & villagers. The couple are good together, and some of their scenes were heartwrenching. But I also felt that it dragged in places, and didn’t always like the characters. It’s hard to describe!
Definitely worth a read if one’s interested in Alistair’s story, and/or Miss Mather’s, though, as this gives the necessary backstory.

I was enjoying this, but I think it's down to a timing thing. It started to fall apart for me when I picked up a book I'm still hungover from, and I cannot believe Duran is the victim in this case.Anyway, she's a gorgeous author, but the pacing was off and I needed more them.

This is my first by Meredith Duran, and I loved it! Such good writing! From the very first pages I was praying that there wouldn't suddenly be some horrible misogyny or something to ruin it, because I already adored it so much!
Very minor spoilers- About 3/4 of the way in the hero had a scene where he started to act like an ass. It happens so often in Historical Romances, and then magically we're supposed to forgive all his abuse after he realizes that she hadn't cheated on him (or whatever the issue was), and I always resent being forced to just gloss over his cruelty like it never happened, (or was justified!). So I was disappointed that this H might go that way, but figured unless it got much worse, the books would still be worth reading for the rest of it which was so enjoyable. And then, instead of doubling down on the bad behavior, the H actually stopped and looked at the situation from the heroine's perspective!
And realized his error! And apologized! It's sad how shockingly rare that is in HRs! Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I have my fingers crossed that the others will be of a similar quality!
