In Memory of Carole Griffin, 1938 – 2012

Election cycles come and go, but no matter who occupied their seat in Florida State Government, Carole Griffin knew them, and they knew her. Well liked and respected by both parties, everyone knew where she stood. She called governors by their first name.

Carole was a true champion for the unborn and she had the political expertise to see a task through. Many who went into battle with Carole were taught how to lobby and stay on point during press conferences. Her professional bearing and style kept her ready at a moment’s notice.

Carole was a champion of freedom for Christian principles. Her tireless determination helped defeat ERA. She worked on behalf of the Home School bill, but her most pressing priority was protecting the unborn babies. She gave leadership to Right to Life and Eagle Forum. She broadcast her own radio show. There was no better source for news than Carole.

The passing of Carole is a loss for many privileged to have worked beside her. The things she cared for and was passionate about represented core Christian and American values. She left a void. We miss her.

In Memory of Nellie Gray, 1924 – 2012

Excerpts from Washington Times, August 20, 2012 editorial by Rep. Christopher H. Smith, NJ.

"At Nellie’s first March for Life on Jan. 22, 1974, I, along with thousands of others, gathered in the nation’s capital believing that the innate cruelty of Roe v. Wade would be rejected by compassionate Americans, including politicians. The great March for Life, hatched in her living room, went on to become the nation’s largest annual pro-life gathering.

She never wavered from this goal, calling upon ‘all grass-roots pro-lifers and government officials to unite because any abortion is untenable.’"

Nellie’s life was characterized by service to her country. She served as a corporal in the Women's Army Corps in World War II and earned an undergraduate business degree, a master’s degree in economics, and a law degree. She worked as a civil servant in the Departments of State and Labor for 28 years. She retired from the federal government early so that she could help lead the effort to restore legal protections to the preborn.

No matter whom she addressed—young marchers in the crowd or presidents of the United States—Nellie’s message was clear, unambiguous, empathetic, and proudly pro-life.

In Memory of over Fifty-Six Million Missing Babies

The nine-week-old pre-born baby on the cover seemed to

be pondering a future with a mommy and a daddy. He sucked

his thumb. He could hear voices, music, and feel vibrations. In this

moment he was safe, secure, comfortable in the most sacred place

designed for a developing baby, his mother’s womb.

And then came horrific, inescapable, death.

Pat Harmon, Godmother to the Pre-born Babies

Pat Harmon is representative of other humble, selfless warriors of many years, standing against the killing of God’s innocent ones. She and they shy from attention.

Shouts from passing cars, Get a job, or Don’t you have anything better to do? are probably heard outside every abortion clinic in America. No one has heard it more than Pat Harmon. The remark closest to hitting the mark is, Haven’t you got a life? Yes, Pat has a life, and it’s a day-after-day pursuit in her own way of saving a baby’s life.

Excerpted here, Christopher Murphy’s article on the editorial page of the Orlando Sentinel, October 25, 2011 described Pat best: "My destination required me to make a right on Virginia Drive where I saw, sitting on a small portable stool outside the EPOC Clinic, one older woman. She was holding flyers meant to discourage women from paying the clinic staff to kill their unborn daughters and sons.

The woman who has sat outside that clinic for years enjoys no police protection and no media attention. The woman is quiet, she is committed, and she likely will be out there as long as she’s alive and mobile. Alone, unassuming, that woman has more guts and character than every occupier of every Wall Street on the planet. More important, a boy whose mother might have killed him will be laughing with joy as he drives in a run and arrives safe at first base in his Little League game."

A few years ago, Pat planned to attend the luncheon being held to benefit Pro-Life Action Ministries following her shift on the sidewalk. This ministry which furnishes pro-life materials, training, and volunteers to staff the sidewalks, was going to honor Pat publicly. However, Pat’s partner had to leave due to a family member being hospitalized. Pat never budged from her post. Her seat at the luncheon table remained empty.

When we look for heroes to emulate, don’t forget the example of one woman who lives life simply, devotedly, for the unborn babies. Her name is Pat Harmon.

FOREWORD

When the telephone rang in my office that Friday afternoon in 2000, I had no idea how radically my life was about to change. The caller identified herself as Judy Madsen Johnson. Judy shared that she was contacting pastors in the area to see who would be interested in joining a pro-life prayer support group the next Saturday in front of an abortion clinic in Orlando. I accepted the invitation and for the next seven years I learned from Judy Johnson what being pro-life really means.

Many pastors today have a sermon or two they modify each year on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday to keep the pro-lifers in their congregations happy and fulfill their pro-life duty. I must admit that prior to Judy's phone call, I was one of them. But being able to live a pro-life adventure has meant more to me than one can imagine. I credit Judy Johnson as the primary instrument God the Holy Spirit has used in the formation of my convictions and leading me into this very worthy cause.

Judy taught me how to stand on a sidewalk in front of an abortion clinic in searing ninety-degree central Florida heat and cry out to those intent on aborting their pre-born children. She taught me:

To stand fast in the face of threats and ridicule from those the prince of darkness places at the abortion clinic entrances to discourage us.

The differences between simply having a pro-life preference and having a passion to save the pre-born from the ravages of abortion.

That being pro-life involves more than just holding a sign, handing out literature, protesting, preaching a sermon, or picketing.

Being pro-life goes to the center—the very DNA of one's character. Pro-life isn't just something we do, but a way of living, being, and influencing others as we honor and uphold the dignity and image of our God in the process.

Being pro-life is not only rescuing the perishing but sharing God's love and His eternal hope with those about to make the gravest mistake of their lives.

Because of Judy's life and selfless devotion, I've witnessed how effectively and powerfully the Holy Spirit will speak through a person who is committed to following God's prompting in saving babies regardless of the cost. Judy's pro-life influence has resulted in countless decisions for life by young expectant mothers and continues even today in her roles as a writer and speaker, as she compassionately and articulately appeals to their God-given sense of motherhood.

Throughout those years, I also witnessed Judy's bold challenges to young men who nonchalantly meandered into the killing centers behind the young mothers—as if their duties were completed by bringing them to a doctor who could fix their
