    Afterword

    Author Foreword

Yes, love sneaks in when we least expect it. To borrow from the foreword of my first collection (because it’s still true!), even if we were wishing and hoping and yearning, a part of us is always surprised when love taps us on the shoulder and everything we thought we understood about our lives suddenly spins around. Everything is new. Everything is different. Wonderful. Exciting.

That’s the sort of feeling I tried to capture with these ten tales, collected together here for the first time – that lightning-in-a-bottle revelation, that pounding in the chest. It’s one of life’s truly wonderful gifts. And, through this collection, I get to share the experience with you again and again.

For those of you already familiar with these stories, settle in and relish them as not-so-guilty pleasures you can enjoy again and again. For those of you new to these stories, or at least new to them in collected format, here are my brief notes about the inspirations for, or meanings attached to, each story:

Love in the Wings – I used to do a lot of theater. Now my teenage daughter is in it and my heart is always up there with her. If you’re good, your heart is always so open and vulnerable.

Footprints in the Sand - Because there have been times in my life when I’ve needed to run away and the ocean shore is always an emotional touchstone for me.

A Father for Brodie – My friends who are single moms or dads have got to have one of the most challenging life jobs in the world, to care for their children and themselves with what often seems like no support or understanding. Mama bear times two. And when someone offers to share some of that load, how can you separate out all the interests and emotions involved?

Making Room – Obviously single-parenthood was still on my mind with this one, though the issues and personalities are different. Hey, love sneaks in wherever you are.

Will You Marry Me? – Because why, after all, should it be the man who proposes? And if the sort of man you’ve fallen for can’t handle just saying, Yes, then what are you going to do?

Quarters and Cupcakes – Taking my kids to school, it was pretty hard not to notice the number of single parents, both men and women, who were always struggling to manage. Feeling constantly overwhelmed by parenthood myself, it was hard not to feel for them. And make up stories...

Her Right-Hand Man – Professional women and creative genius men – what’s not to love? The only trick, most of the time, is finding a way for them to get past all their professional appearances so they can actually connect.

Across a Crowded Room – Oh my. My wallflower days are showing in this one. The memories of being at parties and not being able to connect can still bring back shivers. How I longed for (and was actually blessed with, once or twice) someone like the brother in this story to help nudge me in the right direction.

Dance Lessons – Love stories in a marriage tend to have a different feel because they’re less often about falling love with someone than falling in love with them all over again. Or maybe that process, with all its attendant insecurities and risks, isn’t so different after all.

How Do You Know? – Ah, this one. Silly title, of course, because it seems to promise a universal answer where none exists. But a personal answer, how a particular person knows when they’ve found the man or woman of their dreams, that’s still a story worth telling. So I did.

    ***

Which gets us to the end of the foreword and the beginning of the stories! Read on, let yourself get swept up in the romance, and feel again what it’s like when love is suddenly there and you’re...LOVE-SNUCK.
