    Speakening - John DePonte

    Introduction

In my five years of teaching English as a Second Language in a New York City public high school and The College of Staten Island, City University of New York, I have researched and discovered many of the linguistic needs of the English language learners who come to live here in the United States. Many students born and raised in the United States share some of the same needs. I have students who have outstripped their American classmates in English as well as in the other academic areas. They receive some of the highest scores in our school on the New York State Regents Exams in all areas. Yet, both these English language learners and the American-born students find it quite difficult to construct grammatically correct sentences in English.

It is in response to this pervasive problem that I have endeavored to devise a dual-language course that will teach the student correct English and Spanish sentence structure in an entertaining, quick, and painless way. Speakening®: English and Spanish for Serious Students is a concise, conversational course consisting of 100 brief dialogues called Exchanges. Students who work through these Exchanges as directed in the Instructions will acquire the foundations of English or Spanish sentence structure the way the native speaker does it: without strain. I have used this approach in my own acquisition of five languages as an adult, and the result is that I am able to write error-free translations without ever having written a single grammar exercise in any language. Through this conversational approach, I have learned to speak, read, and write Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and French. In addition, I have learned to speak grammatically correct Japanese, as well as to write it in romaji (Japanese written in the Roman alphabet).

While Speakening®: English and Spanish for Serious Students is brief, it is comprehensive in that it includes every kind of sentence structure that the student may expect to encounter. Simple practice of the Exchanges will provide the desired result. By working through the book several times, the student will attain mastery of English sentence structure and its Spanish equivalents more completely, quickly, and easily than ever imaginable. After two or three trips through the course, it will actually become as entertaining as visiting with old friends, the way we grow accustomed to spending an evening with our favorite sitcom characters.

I offer this course, not only to share my experience and expertise in language learning and teaching, but also to share my joy of learning. The best way for me to share that joy is to teach what I have learned. Not only have I learned to speak several languages on a level I never thought possible as a youngster, I have had the time of my life doing so. It is my sincerest wish that, while the students who use this book will learn to speak and write grammatically correct English and/or Spanish, they will have fun in the process.
