His father worked as a carpenter during Richard's younger years so he moved between California, Nevada, and Utah as his family moved to follow construction jobs. Richard enlisted in the Navy at 17 and in which he sserved for 6 years. He spent the next 29 years working in electronics and computer software development.

      Introduction

      This book is intended to provide the reader with a comprehensive guide to the options available for personal radio communications, especially during during emergencies. During many of the possible emergency scenarios which might happen from time to time, the public communication facilities will be either overloaded or not working at all. During such an occurrence you will need to provide your own means of communication, between yourself and others in your group, as well as yourself and the outside world.

      I currently hold an Extra class amateur radio operator license, a General Radiotelephone Operator license, and a GMRS station license issued by the US Federal Communication Commission. I have personally used all of the different types of radio communications equipment and services that I write about in this book for many years.

      The information I put forth in this book is oriented mainly toward the United States of America, however most other countries around the world have similar services available. This is especially true for Amateur Radio as there are only a few small places left which do not allow at least some form of
