Boy, the wind was strong. Dakota could actually feel it shudder the metal of the bridge decking, or at least the outside narrow edge where she sat huddled inside her fleece hoodie.

She squinted to see if she could make out anything outside the glare of the halogen lights they’d set up about twenty yards back on either side of her to spotlight her and give everybody a good view so they could either a) talk her back onto the safety of the bridge proper, or b) catch the dramatic moment when she finally decided to end it all and jumped off the Cartwheel Bridge into the rocky, rushing, black waters of the Fraser River far below.

She sighed. Couldn’t see a thing. Not that there was a lot to see here even in the daytime. Just the Lougheed Highway on one side of the river and the Trans-Canada on the other side. Lots of rushing cars and campers during the summer months. The town of Hope a few miles north. And lots and lots of pristine wilderness all around.

With the wind, she couldn’t hear a whole lot, either. Just the rush of it, the roar of water below, and the drone of the RCMP constables on either side who kept
