About this ebook

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

Who was St. Kateri Tekakwitha? She was born in 1656 in what is now upstate New York. Her mother was a Catholic Algonquin and her father was a Mohawk Chieftain. Kateri was devoted to our Lady, the Mother of Jesus, and to Jesus Himself in the Most Blessed Sacrament. How did she come to focus her life in this way? What hardships did she endure in her walk with Our Lord? How did Kateri struggle and endure in order to truly live her faith? Her life was a short one, but it was a life that Kateri lived fully. Yet the most remarkable thing about Kateri’s life was Kateri herself.

Meet this vibrant young woman in the book Crosses in the Woods.

Why read a biography of a saint? A saint is an ordinary person with an extraordinary love of God and neighbor, who now is happy to behold the Face of God in Heaven. We all need the inspiration of good example. Saints inspire us to live a more selfless life, relying on the merits of Christ Jesus in order to become more like Him. Saints likewise inspire us to go to greater lengths to love God and our neighbor. Just knowing about them helps us draw closer to Christ.

    Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

    Northern New York State, 1675

Today seemed like another ordinary day to Tekakwitha as she sat at work with her needle in her uncle's lodge. It was true that she was working at home today instead of working outside in the fields with the other Mohawk women of the village. Tekakwitha loved being outside, especially during spring planting time. But today she worked at home because she had injured her foot; she was very skilled with her needle.

Little did Tekakwitha know that today her dreams would come true. This would be a day unlike any other day, because it would be the turning point of her life. She would receive a great blessing and a great challenge.

Outside of her uncle's lodge, Father de Lamberville was walking nearby. He was a Jesuit priest, and he was
