      Carnival Girl

      Discordant carousel music, the popping of air rifles at the arcade games and the loud, steady murmur of the jostling crowd made Richard’s head ache. He was not a fan of carnivals, but there was nothing better to do on a Saturday night in Brookville now that the movie theater had closed. As it was, the occasional revival, an orator, pianist or singer on the Chautauqua circuit were the only entertainment the townspeople could get. It was nineteen thirty-two, the country was deep in the Depression, and a person had to take amusement where he could find it.

      Trash littered the trampled ground. Richard ambled up and down dirty paths, staring with disinterest at the stalls and booths, the dangerously rusty rides and the diverse cross-section of people drawn to the carnival.

      He was there alone. Since Mary had broken off their engagement and left Brookville to pursue some vaguely defined future in the city, Richard was usually alone. He had believed forcing himself out of the house to come here tonight would shake his melancholy, but the clamor of the crowds and tawdry spectacle of the carnival world made him even more depressed.

      He was headed toward the gate, ready to go home, listen to the radio and read a book for the rest of the evening, when a barker’s cry caught his attention.
