      INTRODUCTION

      Most of the books on divorce seem to fall into two general categories. The first category is that kind of book that tries to prepare you for litigation, which may include specific advice on the law of particular states. The second kind seems to be the kind written from a revenge standpoint, more in the nature of how to take your husband or wife to the cleaners in a divorce. The books on divorce and mediation try a separate approach from the standpoint of agreements.

      My goal in writing this one is a little different, although I do speak about agreements and include a discussion about mediation; but this is not about mediation. It is more about common sense to avoid going emotionally and financially broke, and the control you have when it comes to ending your marriage.

      As a divorce lawyer I see what people do to each other—the other being the person that they once thought they would spend the rest of their lives with. And if they have children, I hear about how the children try to deal with the divorce while their parents go about getting and giving tit-for-tat from the other in a litigated divorce.

      My proposition is simple.
