    Which Cup?

Father's grandmother drank with her fingertips,

Water cleansed by buried hair and

    Guttural breath.

    My grandfather

Drank to his health and to his fill

Out of a glass cup, shaped from the searing sands.

Our friend Michael survived out of leather skin.

Brother sipped out of fired ground,

    That cup of clay.

    I tell you friend

    Uncle gargled with ancient gods

His precious communion born within sun's blood.

I rising drink out of the sky with my mouth,

It caresses me at its side.

Does your hand use this small device

To take from water we have drunk?

    Plaza de España

    Father passes café con leche,

To the boy at his side.

    The boy’s pattering, youthful feet

    spread on concrete

Covered in mud, purple stained and

    Smelling of thyme.

    Imagine,

    These small feet

    Crushed the crocus flowers.

    Notice their broken perfume,

Save the petals for another day.
