The BeltMouse stories did not end with The Adventures of Bennie the BeltMouse. After Bennie had visited his old home, he realized that he could not live by himself anymore. He decided to return to the Valley of the Veils, to his Grandma and Bonnita, and all the friends he had made.

Chapter I
The other day, when I had a few spare moments, I went out to the garden to start cleaning it for the winter.
The weather had turned warm again, what everyone was referring to as a beautiful 'Indian Summer'. It was lovely. As I pulled weeds from the cracks in the brick path, I noticed the neighbor's black cat was fussing around a pile of dried lavender stems. I moseyed over to see what was so interesting, and heard a squeaking and rustling. The cat was pawing and pushing at the pile. I shooed it away and got down on my knees to see what could be there.
I recognized her immediately. She was pulling the stems apart, and her little face was peering up at me with a look of need. I laid my hand on the ground, palm up, close to her. She didn't hesitate. She climbed into my hand as if she had known me all her life. Using my other hand, I cupped her gently as I stood. She relaxed, knowing she was safe. But what was I to do with her? I followed my impulse, and placed her in my apron pocket. Holding her steady, I went back to the house.
When I got inside, I kicked off my shoes and went to the kitchen counter. I removed her from my pocket and placed her on the cutting board. I moved the cups and glasses (the ones waiting to be washed) into the sink, and found a measuring cup just the right height for her to sit on. I pulled up a chair, sat down, and looked at her. She took a deep breath and smiled.
