Barbara Ann Seals Nevergold is a native of Louisiana. Dr. Seals Nevergold received a doctorate degree in counseling education from the University at Buffalo. She co-founded the Uncrowned Queens Institute for Research and Education on Women, Inc. in 1999 and has worked to create a model for the reclamation, collection, preservation and dissemination of the biographic histories of African American women and men. Dr. Nevergold is co-author of the book series, Uncrowned Queens: African American women community builders of Western New York and Oklahoma (volumes 1 – 4). She has also authored and co-authored numerous publications, including the award-winning book, Go, Tell Michelle: African American Women Write to the New First Lady (SUNY Press, 2009). The book features a compilation of letters and poems written to First Lady, Michelle Obama from 100 women throughout the United States and Africa. Dr. Nevergold has extensively researched Andrew J. Smitherman, editor of the Tulsa Star and a principal in the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. In December 2011, Dr. Nevergold’s article, “A. J. Smitherman: A Pen Warrior Wielding the Power of the Press in Defense of His People” was published in the Chronicles of Oklahoma. A second article on Smitherman will be published in the Western New York Heritage Magazine in January 2013.
Dr. Seals Nevergold is married to Paul R. They have two adult children, Alanna Nevergold Marrow and Kyle Robert and four grandchildren, Naia Ellison Reece and Nahri Elizabeth Ann-Marie Marrow, Cameron Josef and William James Nevergold.view less
