Sam the second of seven children was born in 1919 on a farm near Menno, South Dakota. High school was not viewed as necessary by busy farm families of that time and Sam’s formal education did not extend beyond eighth grade. The US Military drafted Sam in 1941.
Stel the youngest of four sisters was born in 1921. She attended country school, graduated from Freeman Academy and Southern State Normal College in Springfield South Dakota. After graduation Stel taught in a rural country school.
Sam and Stel were married during a short leave from the military in January 1944. While Sam was off to war, Stel moved to Watertown where she taught school. Upon Sam’s return from the service he became an electrician in the Watertown area. The couple settled on Stel’s home farm in the Menno area to farm and raise three children; Philip, Jeffrey and Norma. Sam and Stel contribute their rich full relationship to open, honest communication and a strong faith in God.view less
