A graduated of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1912, he graduated with a Master of Science from Harvard University in 1913 and received his Ph. D. in chemistry in 1917 at the age of 27.
His textbook The Chemistry of Powder and Explosives, originally published in two volumes in 1941 and 1943, is considered a landmark in the subject.view less
