Clary has been a consulting historian and businessman in Indiana and New Mexico, and has taught history at Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell and English at the New Mexico Military Institute. He is the author of over a hundred publications in United States military and environmental history, among them six books and numerous historical reports. His books include The Place Where Hell Bubbled Up: A History of the First National Park, Timber and the Forest Service, The Inspectors General of the United States Army 1777-1903, These Relics of Barbarism, A Life Which Is Gregarious in the Extreme, and Fortress America: The Corps of Engineers, Hampton Roads, and United States Coastal Defense.
