    Franz Tunda, an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army, is captured by the Russians in World War I. Reiches, in Brody in Ostgalizien, am Rand eines Vielvölkerreiches, um das er zeitlebens trauerte. Er studierte in Wien, begann für Zeitungen zu schreiben und wurde rasch zu einem der bestbezahlten Journalisten seiner Zeit. Nebenbei entstand ein erzählerisches Werk, das zu den schönsten und ergreifendsten des 20. Jahrhunderts gehört. Joseph Roth starb 1939, keine 45 Jahre alt, im Pariser Exil, drei Monate vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs.
