“A must-read for those who are seeking a little magic in their lives.” —Deborah Harkness, #1 bestselling author of A Discovery of Witches
In a shabby house, on a shabby street, in the new capital of Madrid, Luzia Cotado uses scraps of magic to get through her days of endless toil as a scullion. But when her scheming mistress discovers the lump of a servant cowering in the kitchen is actually hiding a talent for little miracles, she demands Luzia use those gifts to improve the family's social position.
What begins as simple amusement for the nobility takes a perilous turn when Luzia garners the notice of Antonio Pérez, the disgraced secretary to Spain's king. Still reeling from the defeat of his armada, the king is desperate for any advantage in the war against England's heretic queen—and Pérez will stop at nothing to regain the king's favor.
Determined to seize this one chance to better her fortunes, Luzia plunges into a world of seers and alchemists, holy men and hucksters, where the lines between magic, science, and fraud are never certain. But as her notoriety grows, so does the danger that her Jewish blood will doom her to the Inquisition's wrath. She will have to use every bit of her wit and will to survive—even if that means enlisting the help of Guillén Santángel, an embittered immortal familiar whose own secrets could prove deadly for them both.
A Macmillan Audio production from Flatiron Books.
Editor's Note
Ancestral historical fantasy…
Bardugo, the author behind the beloved Grishaverse (which spans many series, including “Shadow and Bone” and “Six of Crows”), delivers an adult historical fantasy inspired by her own ancestors. When influential people discover Luzia Cotado, a lowly kitchen servant, has magical powers, she suddenly has to navigate court intrigue and shifting loyalties. There’s also training under an immortal familiar (who may become something more than a friend) — all while hiding her Jewish heritage.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I loved this book! It was a great story about a strong young woman.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I was hesitant after the ninth house novels to read this author again, but this was stunning. Everything I loved about the aesthetics of Witch of Duva while paying homage to lesser known cultures of magic. Love love LOVE.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I enjoyed reading this book and really loved the ending.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A Review of ? The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo
? ? ? ? ? FIVE STARS
? ? ? Full round of applause for this book
✍️ The excellent writing I expect from Bardugo that kept me loving every word and sentence.
? Beautiful story with a romance that can rival any love story out there without entirely focusing on the romance. I love a good romance as much as anyone, but The Familiar didn't let it over take the whole book.
? Each and every character was in full 3D, I've never been able to imagine characters as vividly as I did in this book.
? I read and listened to the audiobook, but mostly the audiobook, so I need to give credit to the amazing narrator, Lauren Fortgang. Without you, I would have no clue how to pronounce the names.
I highly recommend everyone go out right now and pick up this book! It is beautifully written with spectacular magic. It did not leave me wanting more, only because it was brilliantly wrapped up. Will definitely be reading this again someday, which says something for me because I only have 2 other books on my re-read list. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Absolutely gorgeous writing that blends a historical fantasy and dark romance centered around the Spanish Inquisition. A new favorite!

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It was different than anything I have read, but I was intrigued. It was well written, kept a good pace, and had lots of historical things mixed with magical moments.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A well-told story, but the characters were largely two-dimensional and followed to many machinations wrought by the author’s predilections. The male characters, in particular, were all either predictively cruel or pathetic— as if the author had no understanding of men at all — except for the one male who is not much of an actual man—the immortal of the story. It is a familiar pattern in the cinematic and literary imagination of the day.
