However, others feel that the book drags in certain places and is confusing at times. Despite the mixed reviews, the book is praised for its cool plot twist and the narrator's performance. Overall, it is a thought-provoking and entertaining story that delves into themes of morality and hope.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This isn’t one of my favorites of Dean Koontz. It seemed to drag in too many places. It is, however, very interesting that I would read it in the midst of this pandemic and all the hate and riots in the world right now. Almost parallels what is happening now in some ways.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5This narrator’s accent is absurd. Unlistenable. No one talks like this.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5My favourite Koontz to date - by far! - and amongst my favourite books ever. The story is ok, the characters are good, but the language…! The language is sublime. And the delivery, by the narrator, was perfect. Excellent.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A beautiful novel, and a wonderful, soulful reading of it.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Incredibly slow for a Koontz novel. One of the rare times I actually gave up on a book after suffering thru 75% of it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It’s a rare work of horror/fantasy fiction written with truly intelligent characters who make smart choices as part of the narrative. This is one such work. My only reason for reserving that last star is the underlying christian theme. I’m an atheist, and I’m sickened by the ever increasing ignorance of my country’s embrace of a forced dogmatic theocracy, and not even of the “Jesus is love” sort. Just the oppressive hateful version; at least this work’s allegory is a nod toward the New Testament’s Sometimes message of peace and love. So…there’s that. Koontz using another work of well known fiction as inspiration for his better written work with less violence. At least Koontz unconditionally disapproves of rape as opposed to the highly influential misogynistic bible.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The unique flow of the story, the detailed description of the characters and their unique traits were spectacular. The ending
Was unexpected, for sure!
Koontz’ descriptions made capable a vivid description of people, places and things!! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dean Koontz will ALWAYS be one of my favorite authors. He never fails to grasp my attention from the first page to the last. This book was not an exception, I loved it and I loved the characters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I would rate it higher if I could.
Fantastic plot and characters.
Excellent listen. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent story! Not at all what I thought though! Recommend
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This was ok but not quite as exciting or interesting as I normally expect from Koontz. The imagery was amazing-nobody can set a scene or make you visualize better. But the story itself was just ok for me.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Metaphors delight and startle me as I followed the story of such young lives. Each unaware of their true selves amongst the scared humans we all are.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Not a typical Koontz novel. I didn’t like this one.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wonderful story beautifully written excellent narration a voice that pleasant and easy to listen to, very enjoyable experience ?
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I tried to keep up… it all sounded like a great idea, it in the w d it was just a bunch of I don’t know what
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great read with a surprising twist. Could it be true?
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This book was torture. I wasted hours of my life listening to it
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wonderful story! totally original idea and not what you expect at all. A fast paced thriller with enchanting & strange elements. Narrator was also very good!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Somewhere between a vampire thriller and a post-apocalyptic adventure, this book was different from what I expected. It has some interesting ruminations on morality and a touching enough love story to keep it moving forward steadily.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I gave this book a chance because of all the rave reviews. Ugh! Interesting premise, but not enough to justify the maximalist writing, preachy monologues and artificial dialogue. I ground through exhaustive descriptions and rambling digressions to be rewarded with a disappointing reveal. Slogging through this book felt like having detention in a hot windowless room. I particularly disliked that the protagonist basically got dragged through the entire story without having to make any real decision or overcome any crisis; a divine puppet, to borrow a metaphor from the book. That’s 11 hours I’ll never get back.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Adolescent angst is made much worse when dealing with vampires. In spite of the presence of vampires, this is not a horror novel.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Easily one of my favourite books. Excellent! Very profound writing. I thought at first it was a new take on the Hunchback story but this book hits at the core of every man's morality, hope, fear and so much more.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great insight is shown; one should surprised by the knowledge of the world, virology, psychology, and theology presented. Additionally, it is a very good story that is as entertaining as it is provocative. Knoontz, as always, is presenting the tail with the enviable prose with witch each paragraph lives and moves.
