About this audiobook

Now a Netflix movie directed by Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Hush) and starring Carla Gugino and Bruce Greenwood.

Master storyteller Stephen King presents this classic, terrifying #1 New York Times bestseller. When a game of seduction between a husband and wife ends in death, the nightmare has only begun…

“And now the voice which spoke belonged to no one but herself. Oh my God, it said. Oh my God, I am all alone out here. I am all alone.

Once again, Jessie Burlingame has been talked into submitting to her husband Gerald’s kinky sex games—something that she’s frankly had enough of, and they never held much charm for her to begin with. So much for a “romantic getaway” at their secluded summer home. After Jessie is handcuffed to the bedposts—and Gerald crosses a line with his wife—the day ends with deadly consequences. Now Jessie is utterly trapped in an isolated lakeside house that has become her prison—and comes face-to-face with her deepest, darkest fears and memories. Her only company is that of the various voices filling her mind…as well as the shadows of nightfall that may conceal an imagined or very real threat right there with her…

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a genuinely good story with Stephen King's signature style. The concept of the book is creepy and the writing is vivid and grotesque. Some readers may find certain descriptions uncomfortable, but others see it as an endorsement. While not the strongest in King's collection, it is still worth a read. The audiobook narration and production may be distracting for some. Overall, the book offers genuinely scary moments and an incredible journey into the characters.

Enjoyed it very much. I especially liked the tie-in to another King novel, Dolores Claiborne.

Not what I thought it would be, bit still good. Really reflects the darkness of the early Steven King years.

An intense thriller that makes you think, “What would I do!?” I had seen the movie and thought I’d give the book a try. I wasn’t disappointed one bit!

It is the book I liked the least by Stephen King. The first few chapters are utterly boring and the fear that one would expect in a King's book, never really emerges.

3.5 stars. Has most of the Stephen King-isms that you either love or hate but overall a genuinely good story.

I thought it was great until I listened to the audiobook and realized that the story was great on Netflix but the book is AMAZING, you get in the characters the way he always takes us... incredible travel in this story... I love he’s reading us his story

Brutal! There are definite triggers for any victims of rape or incest, so that should be clear before going in. It just makes you so uncomfortable. Some of the descriptions had me ready to vomit and pass out, so to some that is an endorsement and others may find it turns them off to the book. I can't understand how he turned this idea into a full length novel. To most writers the main idea of this story would be a short story at best, but he was able to make something full length and extraordinary out of it.

Mr.King has a way with words. His vivid and grotesque writing really elevate this concept into something that actually works as a full length novel, and that’s saying something. Not the strongest in Kings ouvre, but definitely worth a go round. Some genuinely scary stuff happens here.
Points also to Lindsay Crouse for excellent narration.

the concept of this book in itself is creepy enough, however i didnt quite understand throwing in past memories, multiple personalities, AND a boogyman. I guess youd have to give the story something else to keep it interesting but I think it was still far too much AND slow goings at that

If you’re expecting a great story like The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon or The Outsider, you’re going to be disappointed. It is worth a read but not his best and whatever you do don’t listen to the audiobook. Or at least, listen to a sample first. The author’s voice was fine most of the time but there times where her voice was like nails on a chalkboard to me. Additionally, they had strange and annoying music sounds at various times throughout the book. This was a distraction and not a welcome one for me.
