About this audiobook
Winner of the Coretta Scott King - John Steptoe for New Talent Author Award
Filled with mystery and an intriguingly rich magic system, Tracy Deonn’s YA contemporary fantasy reinvents the King Arthur legend and “braids together Southern folk traditions and Black Girl Magic into a searing modern tale of grief, power, and self-discovery” (Dhonielle Clayton, New York Times bestselling author of The Belles).
After her mother dies in an accident, sixteen-year-old Bree Matthews wants nothing to do with her family memories or childhood home. A residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC–Chapel Hill seems like the perfect escape—until Bree witnesses a magical attack her very first night on campus.
A flying demon feeding on human energies.
A secret society of so called “Legendborn” students that hunt the creatures down.
And a mysterious teenage mage who calls himself a “Merlin” and who attempts—and fails—to wipe Bree’s memory of everything she saw.
The mage’s failure unlocks Bree’s own unique magic and a buried memory with a hidden connection: the night her mother died, another Merlin was at the hospital. Now that Bree knows there’s more to her mother’s death than what’s on the police report, she’ll do whatever it takes to find out the truth, even if that means infiltrating the Legendborn as one of their initiates.
She recruits Nick, a self-exiled Legendborn with his own grudge against the group, and their reluctant partnership pulls them deeper into the society’s secrets—and closer to each other. But when the Legendborn reveal themselves as the descendants of King Arthur’s knights and explain that a magical war is coming, Bree has to decide how far she’ll go for the truth and whether she should use her magic to take the society down—or join the fight.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be an amazing YA fantasy novel that combines mystery, magic, and a touch of reality. The story, inspired by the legend of King Arthur, starts off a little slow but quickly becomes captivating. The well-developed characters and vivid descriptions make the book a joy to read. Readers appreciate the representation of a BIPOC lead and the exploration of important themes like racism and grief. Overall, this book is a fantastic gem that tackles themes of belonging, legacy, and defining one's path."
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If I could give this six stars, I would. This book is so complex, and I think so important — it’s entertaining and exciting and even makes time for romance, but it’s as deep as Bree’s powerful roots.
Read this is you know that Black women have amazing, and too often underappreciated, magic; if you want a fantasy book that’s very real about the legacies of slavery and racism; if you like heroines who actually have good female friends; if you’re LGBTQ+ and want a book where, as far as the protagonist goes, you’re recognized and welcome. Read if you like Arthurian myth; if you live for adventure but have time for a character’s inner development, as well as their outer journey; read for the kissing, the monsters, the friendships, the heroism.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book reminds me of The Crown of Feathere plot and Vampire Diaries at the same time. Certainly worth reading. Fast pace. Deals with racism, grief, loyalty, etc. Elements of Arthurian legends and magic!

The intricate ties among the characters, the twists and turns, and the ultimate realization on Bree's destiny filled my every imagination. I can't wait to see her grow and take on this new challenge.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Complex but phenomenal book. I almost got confused at some point. But the book touches on very important realistic issues like racism in the south, colonialism and family issues.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/53 stars because, the main character disappointed me. She didn't put up good fights. 80% of the book Bree was trying to "find herself" . The worst thing is that Bree kept overreacting all the time. I wanted to quit this book, but.. my favourite character is Sel;) Anyway it's ok.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a unique twist on the Arthurian legends. Great characters development and plot progression. Just enough information held back and slowly released without getting frustrated by pacing. The MC was so strong and I respected her ability to describe her feelings and thoughts.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not at all what I was expecting. Magic system/world building was a bit confusing at first, there are so many characters tying back to the Arthurian legend. The ending was so action packed and I’m so curious how it’s all going to end!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This felt like all of my favourite teenage series got rolled into one supreme adult storyline and I am here for it!! It reminded me of Twilight meets The Hunger Games meets Deonn's genius writing that felt like the story unfolded with the smoothness of Tolkien or Rowling! The topics covered in this book absolutely floored me. The way she addressed racism and how that has festered in present society is nothing short of a masterpiece! I can not wait for the next book to come out. I think this will be the next big series!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The author and main character takes us on a journey that illuminates the lived experience and historical trauma that a black women and her family can face, while also challenging the traditional hero narrative in an interesting and complex way. Glad I read this and that books in the fantasy category are beginning to promote a more diverse hero story :)

The author beautifully and masterfully wove culture, history and folklore into this body of work.
