About this audiobook
A “hypnotic” (The New York Times Book Review) collection of four novellas—including the inspirations behind the films Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption—from Stephen King, bound together by the changing of seasons, each taking on the theme of a journey with strikingly different tones and characters.
This gripping collection begins with “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,” in which an unjustly imprisoned convict seeks a strange and startling revenge—the basis for the Best Picture Academy Award-nominee The Shawshank Redemption.
Next is “Apt Pupil,” the inspiration for the film of the same name about top high school student Todd Bowden and his obsession with the dark and deadly past of an older man in town.
In “The Body,” four rambunctious young boys plunge through the façade of a small town and come face-to-face with life, death, and intimations of their own mortality. This novella became the movie Stand By Me.
Finally, a disgraced woman is determined to triumph over death in “The Breathing Method.”
“The wondrous readability of his work, as well as the instant sense of communication with his characters, are what make Stephen King the consummate storyteller that he is,” hailed the Houston Chronicle about Different Seasons.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. While some stories are fantastic and enjoyable, others are disappointing and disturbing. The first three stories are entertaining and well-written, with 'The Body' and 'Shawshank' being particularly enjoyable. However, the story 'Apt Pupil' is disturbing and lacks a satisfying ending. Overall, this collection is recommended for fans of Stephen King, but with caution for those sensitive to certain themes.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Loved this collection well besides apt pupil. The last story will always stick with me.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Wow, what a storytelling. Each story was captivating, and when I say it took my breath away, it sure did!! Only King can tell a story with a twist and perfect amount of horror!! Highly recommend this audio or book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/54 stories that were good. I enjoyed 3 of them. Apt Pupil is not so much something one enjoys, but rather uses to innoclate oneself from ignorance that evil exists. Shawshank was addicting. The Body had characters you care about, even tho they toss off slurs. The Breathing Method is short and a bit oblong. But once it gets to Xmas, the story sinks its teeth.
I think i recommend this book and its stories. But they can be an uneasy read. Written in a time, and about times, that had not come to grips with the morals we have now. If you can face the past for its inequities, these may be worthwhile. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent book, excellent narration. Among Kings best, and is perfect as a starting place or a visit with a familiar friend. Highly recommended
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5SK has such a knack for telling a story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really uses the title of Book to utilize the difference between all the! Amazingly written and read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Good story's, I would recommend, its keeps you interested in the stories
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is vintage Stephen King - the descriptive, talkative, engaged storyteller he was in his earlier years. The stories take awhile to get going, but are entertaining throughout. Not your typical Stephen King collection, but that's what makes it special. Recommend.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The only reason this gets 4 instead of 5 stars is because of apt pupil. If it would have been the last story in the book I wouldn’t have finished it. I read a lot of historical fiction from World War Two era, however this story was disgusting and the wrong side of it I care to read. There wasn’t even any satisfying ending to the torture.
However, the body, Shawshank and the last story of the breathing method were all joys in their own way.
The body was a coming of age story with just enough real horror. I watched the movie forever ago and the book was like icing on the cake for me!
Shawshank was a deep look into life and I enjoyed it as much a the movie.
The breathing method, it wasn’t creepy or anything. It had an interesting story for a period piece and the ending had a touch of horror. I was kind of expecting more scary by the end of this one but I still enjoyed it.2 people found this helpful
