"Listeners will enjoy this fresh take on a new fantastical world in which kids play an active role in determining the future of society." -AudioFile on The Marvellers
Eleven-year-old Ella Durand is the first Conjuror to attend the Arcanum Training Institute, a magic school in the clouds where Marvellers from around the world practice their cultural arts, like brewing Indian spice elixirs and bartering with pesky Irish pixies.
Despite her excitement, Ella discovers that being the first isn’t easy—some Marvellers mistrust her magic, which they deem “bad and unnatural.” But eventually, she finds friends in elixirs teacher, Masterji Thakur, and fellow misfits Brigit, a girl who hates magic, and Jason, a boy with a fondness for magical creatures.
When a dangerous criminal known as the Ace of Anarchy escapes prison, supposedly with a Conjuror’s aid, tensions grow in the Marvellian world and Ella becomes the target of suspicion. Worse, Masterji Thakur mysteriously disappears while away on a research trip. With the help of her friends and her own growing powers, Ella must find a way to clear her family’s name and track down her mentor before it’s too late.
"A marvelous gift of a novel! With fantastical twists at every turn, Clayton has created a world that readers won't want to leave.” —Angie Thomas, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of The Hate U Give and Concrete Rose

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be an immersive middle grade read with a captivating magic system and a school that allows readers to feel like they can be part of a magical world. Fans of Harry Potter and Amari will truly love and enjoy this book. The writing is thorough and broaches difficult subjects with ease. While some readers found it cute and reminiscent of magical schools, others questioned its age appropriateness due to its focus on witchcraft.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The audio really helped bring the book to life - made you really feel like you were there. Overall, I thought that it was a really nice book & I highly recommend for those who have middle school students as it helps showcase easily how prejudice works. I’m hoping that book 2 has less fillers and a more dramatic “ah-ha” climax lol - but that’s a personal preference. I will say though that some of the twist you really didn’t see coming & that I can highly appreciate
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5This is all about witchcraft how is this age appropriate.

This could truly stand the test of time with such thorough writing that had no issue in broaching difficult subjects. I look forward to continuing to live in this world of Marvellers!
