About this audiobook

The 2016 election of Donald J. Trump exposed a deep divide in American politics and culture, one that pollsters and pundits didn't seem to realize was there. But Trump did, and he used it to his advantage in ways that surprised nearly everyone, even those who voted for him. Perhaps the biggest question on many people's minds is how, exactly, did a crass, unrepentant reality TV star and cutthroat business tycoon secure the majority of the religious conservative vote? Now the New York Times bestselling author of The Faith of George W. Bush and The Faith of Barack Obama turns his pen toward the Trump phenomenon. Through meticulous research and personal interviews, Stephen Mansfield uncovers who Trump's spiritual influences have been and explains why Christian conservatives were attracted to this unlikely candidate. The book ends with a reflection on the vital role of prophetic distance, both historically and now.

What our readers think

Readers find this title enlightening and interesting. The book provides insight into Trump's background and the key influencers in his life. It also discusses the Christian Right's support of Trump, which is purely transactional. However, the author applies different standards to Clinton and Trump, which may be a drawback for some readers.

The insight into Trump's background and the key influencers in his life are interesting. The analysis of Obama's and Clinton's alienation of the Christian Right (CR) is also very interesting. Most interesting for me, however, is that the CR support of Trump is purely transactional. The CR support has nothing to do with the character, the morality or the faith of the man, it is simply based on mutual benefit - they give him votes and in return, he pushes their agenda. As the book progresses, the author applies different standards to Clinton and Trump. Clinton's pro-choice stance is out of step with the CR however Trump's lies, racist and sexist remarks are in step with modern America and are acceptable to the CR. At this point, I lost interest.

Choosing Donald Trump now becomes the Challenge of Transforming Donald Trump through the "prophetic voices crying in the wilderness" who dare to speak truth to one who "loves to have the preeminence," at all cost! Stephen Mansfield's chapters on the Art of Prophetic Distance, I also agree, is the only remedy to transforming the "killer king," dividing this nation, into the "healing king" that can make America Great Again, or truly make it Great for the first time!
