What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a helpful training guide for men to grow and become stronger and better for the Lord. It provides lots of advice about how to pursue God in their life. However, some readers feel that the book stereotypes and judges certain men, which they find antiquated and not helpful. Overall, it is a great tool for Christian men who are trying to grow as men of God.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very excellent read for all men. This book is so needed. A helpful training guide for men to grow and be come stronger and better for the Lord. I would definitely recommend this to any man.
It took me about 5 months to finish as I went through each chapter in pondered each question. Almost like a university course for manhood. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The role of the Holy Spirit. This is a great tool especially for Christian men who are trying to pursue God in their life. This audio book gave me lots of advice about how to grow as man of God.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Stereotyping and judging in the first ten minutes of the book. He lost me when he says that this book is not for men that frost their hair and read certain magazines... ok, so I guess you only want to reach men that think just like you? That's helpful. And he states that if your wife cusses and changes the oil in her car, it's more a reflection of the man than the wife. Let me tell you something. My wife is a damn good mechanic, and loves working on vehicles. I taught her most of what she knows. Some she learned herself. This dude would have you believe she should be getting pedicures and gossiping with her girlfriends. That type of cookie cutter keep you in a box thinking is antiquated and not helpful. You want to be a man? Spend time with your family and make God a priority in your house. TEACH them how to work on cars if that's what they want. Be kind to people and seek The Fathers wisdom every day.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Writing: 4.5; Theme: 5.0; Content: 5.0; Language: 5.0; Overall: 4.5Pastor MacDonald opens up with experiences from his own life as he delves into numerous topics that relate to men being men as God calls them to be. He uses 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 as his text verse as he develops what makes a man a man. He shares forty character traits as he develops his point and mission. This book is packed full of Biblical principles that all men can attain to become the man God desires them to be. Highly recommend. ***July 30, 2022***
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5√ Solid Teaching, Dull, Preachy
This book has a very wide focus. It covers a LOT of different issues that men face. ACT LIKE MEN provides excellent, biblical advice for each of them. The broad focus comes at a cost, however. It is difficult to read this book and clearly recall the key points--there are just so many ideas, all over the map.
Although ACT LIKE MEN is solid teaching, it does not make for captivating reading. Maybe because we are in a culture of ultra short attention spans. We watch "24" on television, where a new terrorist act happens ever 2 minutes. I found the writing style overly wordy and overly preachy. I admit it--I don't really want to be preached at.
Some of the stories are tales in the life of a young pastor. Nothing at all wrong with that, but those stories seem unlikely to really grab at the heart of the reader.
The fact that there needs to be a detailed section, "How to Get the Most from Act Like Men" illustrates the problem. How can a narrative make an impact if it's not clear how to even read the book?
Rev MacDonald points out that men simply don't read much, and so the author is "writing this book with the wild goal that men who can't remember the last book they opened and don't plan to read in the future, would take the time to read this." I think the author's point is true, but honestly, I don't think this book till help to alleviate that.
√ There are lots of excellent points in this book. Alas, I don't think many men will see them.
