About this audiobook
In a quiet village in the Shire, young Frodo is about to receive a gift that will change his life forever.
Thought lost centuries ago, it is the One Ring, an object of terrifying power once used by the Dark Lord to enslave Middle-earth. Now darkness is rising, and Frodo must travel deep into the Dark Lord’s realm, to the one place the Ring can be destroyed: Mount Doom.
The journey will test Frodo’s courage, his friendships and his heart. Because the Ring corrupts all who bear it—can Frodo destroy it, or will it destroy him?
'The English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and those who are going to read them.'—Sunday Times
This brand-new unabridged recording is narrated by the acclaimed actor, director and author, Andy Serkis.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5To hear Andy Serkis narrate is to hear each character that we’ve come to know. I find it more satisfying to listen to this edition than to watch the movies.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I didn't like the version FotR in English as much as the version in Serbian. I don't know if it's a situational thing (when I first read it in Serbian I was a teenager, and LotR was my first fantasy book and everything was new & shiny; now I'm stressed & in a major book slump), or if it's just the case of English not being my native language and having a greater emotional response to the book in Serbian. But whichever it is, I still enjoyed the book, I just wish my first re-read after 15-ish years wasn't in English.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The Fellowship of The Ring (Pretty damn good. I like all the history, it's a fully realized world. Tom Bombadill sucked ass and that part was way too long.)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Now I recall why I have not re-read the LotR in 40 years. It isn't solely the interminable poems and songs. It is the _endless_ trivial details (which direction someone walks, for example) that have no real bearing on the outcome of the plot or the development of the characters. I know this is a beloved classic and all us fantasy fiction fans owe Tolkien a great debt of gratitude. But jeez, a strong editor sure could have tighted this thing up. (Horrible thought: one did so. Tolkien's original was even longer!)
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is not my usual book fare and I got lost amidst all the different creatures and landscapes. Still, the book gradually grew on me and it was fun reading about Frodo and gang's adventures. It was heartening to 'witness' Frodo's courage and Sam's loyalty to him. And who could forget Gandalf's sacrifice? I didn't watch the movie but I can imagine the collective gasp when Gandalf fell into the abyss.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a re-read (actually a listen of the audiobook edition, read by the talented actor Andy Serkis), of The Fellowship of the Ring. Clocking in at 23 hours, this was a long edition, but highly recommended!
After watching the prequel history of Sauron and the making of the rings in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on the small screen, this novel and the history referenced in it became more alive to me and I felt more grounded in the quest. The fabulous narration (with songs and recitations) was awesome. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love this book! I love how descriptive Tolkien is - great at world building. I love that he takes the time to explain the lore in the middle of the story so that we can better understand the significance of what is happening. Gandalf's sass makes me laugh every time. But my favorite character is Sam Gamgee! I adore him. I want to hug him and squeeze his little hobbit cheeks. He is so dedicated and trustworthy that I am currently convinced that the success of this mission will depend on him and his faithfulness to Frodo.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Well, I finished. It's undeniably brilliant (even though the boys themselves often aren't) and I can totally understand the perspective of the fans. However, it's not for me and I have no interest in rereading it for details or deeper understandings, nor in continuing through the trilogy.
Finally, the book that has been on my to-read list the longest is off. And yes, I count it, even though I skimmed the songs and skipped the histories and geographies. (After all, one can claim that they have read the Christian Bible even if they skipped the 'begats' can't they?)
And no, of course my rating is not objective. It's a personal evaluation. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Although I like the LOTR trilogy overall, The Fellowship of the Ring succeeded mostly in boring me to tears. Sure, some parts of the book are excellent, but Tolkien tends to draw out things into page after page of dullness. It almost seems like it was used as "filler" to lengthen the book. Don't get me wrong, the trilogy overall is great! It's just a slow starter.
Now excuse me while i go hide before i get beat up! - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is really the first volume of a single novel divided into three volumes for publishing purposes, so it’s probably more appropriate to review the whole thing than to review each volume separately.
However, I suppose this first volume is my favourite. Because, although it has various scenes of darkness and danger, overall it seems the most cheerful of the three; and also because Gollum doesn’t appear in it, although he’s mentioned now and then.
To avoid double-counting, I’ve listed here only the times when I’ve read this volume without reading the other two. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5J.R.R. Tolkien is one of the most talented writers
Who’s books I’ve read - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Wow! Excellently narrated! It was real pleasure to listen this book!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Narrated by Gollum himself, the fabulous Andy Serkis. Need I say more?
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Andy Serkis is an amazing narrator. And brings the characters to life with his reading.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Well read with good voice acting. However there are some variations in volume, that make it difficult to listen to in a noisy environment.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing narration, best of its kind! Keeps you glued. ♥️
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5gorgeous songs, incredible acting, I'm so glad I decided to start with this, makes me even more eager to eventually read the books myself
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Tolkien is the greatest author of the 20th century, and one of the greatest of all times.
Also I must admit that I was dubious about Andy Serkis as a narrator...but he may indeed have surpassed Martin Shaw! I particularly enjoyed his renditions of the many songs. Very well done, good sir. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Andy Serkis blows this performance out of the water! These books have been incredible since day one, but this takes them to a whole different level!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Andy Serkis’s narration is simply amazing. The characters are voiced differently without being distracting. This was a very enjoyable listen.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5There is nothing like the lord of the rings narrated by Gollum!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I thought that the reader's voice captured all the aspects of the characters
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Andy Serkis is a wonder!!! Best narration I've ever heard!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Read this trilogy to my children, beginning to end, 3 times over the course of their youth. But listening to this story - the narrator is amazing; I was riveted! Fantastic!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Andy Serkis made this truly come alive. Excellent and well produced! I’ve wanted to read Tolkien for a while and now I’m doing it with a little help from the audiobook version! Thank you!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Andy Serkis is an incredible talent as an actor and narrator. He made the book come alive.
