      This was an awesome book! One thing I recommend is to listen to it in bed until you're tired and it won't be a problem stopping it; It has a sleep timer and its just perfect.

      It was a great book! I loved the reader & how it’s in the perspective of Bob the dog! But I think you should read “the one and only Ivan” before you read this one. But Over all it was an amazing story!

      It was a good book but poorly read so much that I couldn’t understand any of it I recommend do not read this book if you do you won’t like it sorry whoever was reading this but I don’t mean to spoil but you won’t like it because all the words he says he says he‘ he says that he says like‘ something and something something

      Nice animal story. Could've been better. Or maybe I shouldn't have read it so soon after the Animorphs series, also themed (in part) about seeing the world through animals' (and aliens') points of view. (I liked the wolf best, here.)

      I may have missed something, but the whole philosophical theme, about the reason for dogs is to forgive humans, seems to have been dropped. Implication is that Bob learns to agree with the other dogs, but the answer is never made nearly as clear as the question.

      "fur on alert: raised hair on a dog's neck and back an involuntary reaction often caused by fright or aggression" (good to know as I walk the neighborhood, now that I know dogs can get over or through fences)

      "Happy smells like bacon ice cream served up in an expensive leather shoe. You're going to love every minute of it, but you know it won't last forever."

      A statement on the isms, the fact that humans find reasons to diss others and to pick fights: "I'll always give a dog the benefit of the doubt. Life is short. Play is good. And there are plenty of tennis balls to go around."

      First sentence: Look, nobody's ever accused me of being a good dog. I bark at empty air. I eat cat litter. I roll in garbage to enhance my aroma. I harass innocent squirrels. I hog the couch. I lick myself in the presence of company. I'm no saint, okay?

      The One and Only Bob is a sequel to Katherine Applegate's One and Only Ivan. Is it a sequel or more of a companion novel? Definitely a sequel. The novel opens with Bob living with his new family (George, Sara, Julia), and Ivan (the gorilla) and Ruby (the elephant) in their new homes at the local zoo. There are flashbacks--of sorts--to their time living together at the mall (as well as other flashbacks). 

      The One and Only Bob has enough action for ten books. (I jest, mostly). You could argue that The One and Only Ivan was a character-driven, contemplative/reflective story with tons of heart. The One and Only Bob doesn't lack any in the character department. It doesn't. (There are new characters introduced too). And it certainly has HEART. (It is all the feels all at once.) But the action is INTENSE. Now take what you're imagining and magnify by about five. For 98% of this one expect to have your stomach in knots and an ache in your heart. 

      So a storm is coming...and it's a BIG storm. It will catch all the characters--especially the animals, but also the humans--a bit unprepared. 

      I really LOVED this one. It is a love in a different way. It complements One and Only Ivan. It does. But the intensity of the action is something that I could NEVER have handled in a million years as a kid. Bravo to those who can read it without becoming a total wreck. And the ending is 1000% worth it. It is a GREAT book. But oh the journey for these characters!!!!!

      I was not really sure what to expect with this sequel to The One and Only Ivan, and the first part was mainly showcasing Bob's personality, but it did get real - but in a different way than Ivan - when a natural disaster hit.

      Katherine Applegate has a wonderful, distinctive voice, and I adored The One and Only Ivan. In the sequel, Bob, the dog, is cute and sweet and funny. The problem is that there is no plot. And nothing really happens until halfway through the book. I'm sure my young library patrons will enjoy it, but I was a bit disappointed.

      Bob's story unexpectedly resonated for me in this year of trauma, 2020. Bob is dogged (pun intended, yes) by the trauma of abandonment, scraping by as a stray dog, and of not saving Boss, his sister. It's hard for him to reconcile all that with the cush life he now leads living with Julia and her parents; given all that he's been through, does he really deserve it? When Hurricane Gus threatens destruction on all that Bob cares about including his best friends Ivan and Ruby, Bob digs down deep to overcome his mental barriers and find redemption. Not quite as fully formed as "The One and Only Ivan," but again it speaks so well to the current suffering we are in.

      The One and Only Bob (The One and Only Ivan #2) by Katherine Applegate was a great sequel to Ivan. I don't think it was as heartbreaking, which I am thankful for, but it had plenty of emotions. Bob is the little pup from book one that Julia now keeps. A lot happens in here that Bob deals with, some deals with how he feels about himself. I very touching story!

      The little dog, Bob, (from "The One and Only Ivan") now has a cushy life with a family, who goes to the zoo frequently, where he can visit Ivan the gorilla and Ruby the elephant. He is haunted by the memory of his sister, who he abandoned after they were thrown from a car as puppies. When a fierce hurricane comes through, Bob, Ivan and Ruby are all set free when the storm damages some of the zoo enclosures. And in the course of all the struggles with the storm and the zoo animals, Bob hears a bark he will never forget.
      In spite of the physical thickness of the book, it's a very quick read. A sweet story, which all takes place in one day, that left me with a few tears in the end.

      This is adorable. Very much a kids book, but manages to be fast paced and complex. The narrative voice and the unusually short chapters make for a very full on experience, helped along by the plot, the weather, and a sequence of difficult situations that require Bob to be more than they think they can be.

      I haven't read The One and Only Ivan, but one does not have to have done so to appreciate this sequel -- there are numerous references to previous events, but they are placed in sufficient context for this not to matter.

      For a reasonably fast adult reader this is ~1 hour read; I'd expect that a competent middle grade reader would be quite comfortable with the level of the story.

      I can't imagine a better narrator for this book than Danny DeVito. His voice is perfect for the inimitable Bob, a Chihuahua mix who got off to a rough start but made a good friend in Ivan, a mall gorilla.

      When I read an “animal book,” I always have some trepidation because I have a problem with reading about animal cruelty. And there was some of that, but Bob doesn't let anything bother him for too long. What really broke my heart is Ivan and Stella and baby Ruby. Ivan was captured, kept as a house pet until he got too big (gorillas grow – who knew?), then spent 27 years of his life in a shopping mall, in a 40x40 cage. Real, not fiction. Stella, an old elephant, a Ruby, a baby were also there, but I don't know if they were fictional or not. Sometimes I hate people.

      Bob has a family now, but is called on to save his animal friends, and learn whether or not he is brave.

      Despite my disdain for those who mistreat animals and the pain reading about mistreatment causes me, this is a wonderful book. And for me, Bob will always sound exactly like Danny DeVito.

      If you read the beloved One and Only Ivan, then I’m sure you’ll remember Bob, the stray dog who befriended Ivan and Ruby. Bob now has his own story to tell and he has been adopted by Julia and her family. For the first time in his life, he has two meals a day, a comfortable bed, and people who love him. But Bob has been through enough to be skeptical about getting too attached. He’s still close to Ivan and Ruby, often visiting them in their new zoo home, and happens to be there one day when a tornado strikes, followed by a hurricane. After flying for the first time during the tornado, Bob gets to work in a series of harrowing rescues, both at the zoo and the animal shelter down the street. The life-threatening situations help Bob to realize what is important to him and to learn the value of his friends and family. grades 3-7.

      Bob’s story is told from his point of view and in his doggie voice. In fact all the animals communicate in words. The short chapters, action, and humorous narration will hook Ivan’s old friends and new readers alike.

      Until the tornado hit, I found the story to move very slowly. Even though... Ivan fans are going to clamor for The One and Only Bob.

      Katherine Applegate has another winner with this book. Bob is a dog we first met in the book, “The One and Only Ivan”. Bob lived in the mall with Ivan and Ruby. Now Ivan and Ruby live in a zoo not too far from Bob’s new house. He was adopted by Julia who’s father works at the zoo. Through this book we learn how Bob became the dog he is. We understand how his personality was developed. He is a scrappy dog who has learned to survive on his own. He feels guilty about his survival when all his siblings did not survive. Bob goes with Julia and her dad to the zoo to visit Ivan and Ruby while Julia’s dad is making sure things are ready for an approaching hurricane. No one expected a sudden tornado. Once again Bob has to survive. Then he is given a second opportunity when he thinks he hears the bark of one of his siblings.

      I loved this story that was told from Bob’s perspective. I is funny, sarcastic and his view of humans and the world around him make this so fun to read. We see Bob change throughout the book the way a human character changes. This makes him so believable. Not only will this book be on my shelf at school at the beginning of next year, my grandchildren will be receiving a copy. Everyone should have the opportunity to read this book.
