About this audiobook

On a fishing trip with his best friend, Mike, Sam Gunther witnesses a brutal crime at the hands of the infamous Stangler Brothers. Scared, he and Mike try to sneak away, but Mike is caught and murdered. When Sam returns to the scene with the police, all evidence has vanished, and the officers appear unwilling to investigate further. Sam makes plans to avenge his friend’s death, but when his act of revenge turns tragic, he must flee to protect his family from retribution. Hiding in a cave in the Arbuckle Mountains, Sam struggles to survive with the skills learned from his Green Beret father. Desperate to find justice for his friend and return home, Sam eventually discovers he's not the only one seeking vengeance on the Stanglers. He's soon pulled into an all-out war and is plunged into as much danger from his allies as from his enemies.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be engaging, masterfully written, and beautifully narrated. The characters evoke pain and sadness, but also a deep sense of humanity. While some parts of the book were interesting, others left a bad taste. However, the overall experience was enjoyable, with a backwoods scandal keeping readers on the edge of their seat. The story explores moral struggles, although it ends with excessive violence. Despite some flaws, this book is worth a read.

You had me until chapter 11 - so much detail and description up to then -including killing rats in the bloody barn? and then finally the demise of the “bad guys” happens and there is zero description, just a basic description of events? The ending feels so rushed, so yeah 2 1/2 stars

Authentic. I grew up in the same area and had the pleasure and misfortune of meeting people much the same as in the book. My thanks to the author for the trip down memory lane.

This was a truly good book. (Although I wish it were longer)
The writing style is pleasing with a sort of confidence that implies the reader will enjoy the tale.
The narrator was the perfect match for this role, delivering an enjoyable cadence and pace. Along with a perfect accent.
I guarantee that I will listen to this book again.

Surprisingly good read for someone who is not into revenge novels. Plot was great and characters draw you in. I decided I want an inlaid what not box.

It was just about murders and retaliation between the thugs and the victims(?) in the lawless society. So, when someone close to you got murdered you just strike back even murder them and that settles things fine with no convictions?
Some parts were interesting and didn't bore me, though.
All in all this book left a bad taste in my mouth. I could do without listening to it.

Mitchell’s writing of this book was masterful! Jacob McNatt’s reading of the audio version was one of the best I’ve listened to. Having listened to over 100 audiobooks this was by far the best in a very long time, pair these two together again soon please!

Horrible book. It reminds me of what America has become. The good die while the weak live.
