About this audiobook

In the back of Adam Farmer's mind he always knew there was something not quite right about his family. It was more than just the fact that his Dad seemed to be stoically going through the motions, or that his sad-eyed mother spent most of her time in her room. Somewhere in the recesses of Adam's memory he recalled a frantic journey in the middle of the night, hurried like criminals onto a bus, staring out the windows at some dark, malevolent thing none of them could see. Then one day Adam discovers his birth certificates-two of them-among his father's papers, and the first missing piece of the puzzle slides ominously into place. Award-winning author for young adults, Robert Cormier, creates tales that help young adults grow and find their places in society. Narrators Jeff Woodman and John Randolph Jones bring a boy's desperate search for the truth vividly to life.

Phewwww. Not for the faint of heart! Dark, difficult, and disturbing themes.
I remember having strong feelings about this book when I was a kid, refusing to read it, and I had forgotten why. Now 60, I recently saw a reference to this author and decided to finally listen to this book.
Afterwards, I remember that someone told me how it ended and that's why I never read it.
This is a story of a young man with unresolved, severe trauma and loss ... of a healthy family who loved each other well... of shady governmental departments ... institutional medicating ... with an extremely murky and dark ending. I'm not sure if I'm glad i experienced this, and really really not sure if i would share it with anyone under say, 25. I don't really understand why it was written; can't decide if it's a kind story or a sadistic one.
I will say that it is very well crafted; the writing is extremely skilled, and the narration is fantastic. The gentle voice of the main narrator carries the difficult story with kindness and care. But proceed with caution! I feel nauseous after finishing it.
