What our readers think
Readers find this title to be enchanting, whimsically beautiful, and a delight from beginning to end. They love Neil Gaiman's narration and find his voice and reading style to be magical. The book is described as a treat, with a wonderful story that is fantastical, magical, and strange. It is praised for its rich and developed characters, engaging plotline, and its ability to bring out the inner child in adults. Overall, readers highly recommend this book for its romantic and lovely story, making it a new adventure worth going on.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Neil Gaiman is a master of storytelling.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I read this book back in 2008, through bookcrossing.
I found the end a bit disappointing. It is a deconstruction of a typical boy meets girl fairy tale, with some twists on the clichés.
I liked the book, but after all the compliments I heard to Gaiman's writing I was disappointed. But I still wanted to read more of his books, because I love all the little, I guess I could call it easter eggs (little references dropped around the world). I guess that those little twist on the clichés and easter egg dropping are what makes me want to read more and more...
One note that I have in my bookcrossing entry is about comparing the book to the movie: Can't be done!
I saw the movie first and i liked it (I'm a fan of Claire Danes).
And when I read the book I found a totally different story. The movie ends before the end of the book, at the and lived happily ever after and the book has a epilogue, that gives a little about the ever after part, shedding a new light on the characters and their motivation.
And De Niro's Character isn't in the book, and he was one of the best parts of the movie... Hard to beat De Niro dancing in lady's clothes (and with a little heart shaped beauty mark on his cheek) :D - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is my favorite Neil Gaiman book--a beautifully written and imaginative fairy tale with original characters. Yay!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Excellent fantasy.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5My only real complaint was he pacing was strange in some places. I otherwise really enjoyed the story and found myself staying up later than I should to continue listening. Thank you for the entertainment.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5a very cute and sweet book, made of nostalgia and love
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed the pure fantasy, I enjoyed listening to the author!

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very whimsical and fun book. I felt like a child again picturing all the characters.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Gaiman forgot to put the romance in this romantic fairytale.
Luckily he fixed that blunder for the screenplay. The movie is better. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I started to tell you how much I appreciated Niel Gaiman's Stardust, when my computer decided to interrupt my line of thinking. So, I repeat, I think Neil Gaiman is a master of the good story well and richly told. I first met Stardust as a movie I must tell you, I loved. When I saw the book offered in audio form narrated by Neil Gaman himself I had to hear it. I will have to get the book itself to keep because I will read it again. The movie embroidered the story very well, I think. But I prefer the book in its direct and honest development. I plan to listen to as many of Neil Gaiman's books I have read and some I have not read yet. I had so much pleasure listening to Neil tell this story, and look forward with pleasure to hear the rest of the stories.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Ooooooooooh! What a wonderful experience this was. The story is lush, rich -just a feast for the mind. The author reads his story with such a quality of storytelling-unparalleled pleasure.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I did not like American Gods , I did like this book , quite a lot!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mágica!!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love Neil Gaimen!! His narrations of his books are the best thing to listen to.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I so loved the interview with Mr. Gaiman at the end of the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Enchanting! A real "page turner"! (With an apparently English accent)
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A delight from beginning to end. No more no less than exactly what was needed.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Enjoy listening. An romantic and lovely story. Good but a little sad ending.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Working my way through Gaiman’s backlist. This was a great read! The movie is different but just as entertaining!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Neil Gaiman will never cease to amaze me. Never !!!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Easily my favourite of the Gaiman I've read so far - I think his style works much better when he's not trying to be overly pretentious and involve too much philosophising in his work.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I can't believe I've only just read this. I usually don't like seeing movies before books and in this case it did colour my expectations, however the book stands on its own. It's charming and imaginative and if you like unicorns......beware!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5great book, wish multiple people would have read it. loved the voice actor though.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Listening to Neil G. read is literally delightful. This is not a word I usually use when describing books. Dude is magical, his reading is magical, its unbelievably charming. I don't know if I would like the books as well if he weren't reading them. His voice and reading style are really part of the experience Totally love it. Thanks Niel G.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Highly recommended for the romantics and fairytale-loving adults. Neil brought to life his own characters and it was a delight to see.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Listened to this while reading its written form from a pdf file. Such a magnificent listen that brings any adult's mind into its inner child's wanderings.
