As acrime/thriller writer, I have sometimes been accused of deviating from my genre by straying into what some might call science, or even eco fiction.
But I don’t believe in the artificial boundaries placed on us as writers by the marketing concept of genre. Crime, it seems to me, is a broad enough church to encompass everything. And eco-fiction is a subgenre that very easily sits beneath the umbrella of crime.
I have written three eco-themed books – The Firemaker (first of the China Thrillers series), Coffin Road, and my latest book, A Winter Grave – both standalones.
The Firemaker dealt with the subject of genetically modified, or Frankenstein foods. Coffin Road was about the disappearance of bees from the environment and the toxicity of pesticides being peddled by the agrochemical industry. A Winter Grave is set against a backdrop of climate change.
The writing of each of these books was prompted by personal interest.
