In September, Mpho Tutu van Furth, the daughter of the late Desmond Tutu, was barred from officiating the funeral of her godfather Martin Kenyon by the Church of England. The reason? Because she’s married to a woman.

The Church of England justified its actions as being “in line with the House of Bishops’ current guidance on same-sex marriage”. At present, the advice is that clergy in same-sex civil marriages cannot be ordained or granted a new licence.
