I’ve just totted up the number of drilling devices I have, as one does. It seems that I have in my shed: three cordless Makitas, of varying poke and proficiency, then there are two corded drills.
One is a general-purpose lump that, thanks to the wonder of Lithium, seldom sees much use these days. The daddy is an ancient low speed pistol-style Makita; it’s wrist-snappingly torquey, but when the optional side handle is fitted it can drill big holes in hefty steel sections… it’s a brute!
I never lend this to anyone.that needed a 60mm hole (courtesy of a Starrett hole-saw, a formidable beast!) five metres above a bubbling caustic bath, all good fun. The critical factors are always the same, a keen edge and the correct cutting speed on the drill or whatever form the cutting bit takes.
