AN AFTERNOON IN HER SHOES

It came out of nowhere, and I happened to be with Angela at the time.

She’s my sister. Growing up I’d always been the plain one – gawky, angular, with a bump on my nose and wiry red hair it had taken me decades to tame. Meanwhile, all glossy blonde tresses and symmetrical features, Angela had soaked up the attention.

That’s why we were both shocked about what happened decades later. As we came out of a store on the busy city street, a woman came striding over.

‘Hi there.’ She was American. ‘I work for Magnet Modelling Agency. We’re searching for women of mature years. Would you consider attending an interview and maybe doing a few test shots?’

Angela stood glowing like a supernova. She’d never taken the modelling route. She’d married young instead, then divorced, then married again…

Now she preened, only the American shoved the flyer under my Roman nose. ‘Here are all the details. Please come along.’
