Watercolour has an incredible immediacy that focuses the artist’s attention while building up transparent washes. This medium can be used in a variety of ways to create images that range from lively impressions of landscapes to detailed botanical studies, while the liveliness and immediacy of watercolour makes it ideal for capturing the movement of animals. For this study, we’re going to look at the grizzly bear, the lynx and the penguin.

Grizzly Bear

A mighty apex predator, the grizzly bear is also known as the North American brown bear. Grizzlies are typically brown, though their fur can appear white-tipped or grizzled, giving them their name. Although they are not fussy eaters, much of their diet consists of nuts, berries, fruit, leaves and roots. They also feast on salmon, which provide them with valuable nutrition to sustain them through the long winter ahead. Dramatic gatherings of dozens of grizzly bears can be seen at Alaskan waterfalls,
