Couperin’s Leçons des Tenèbres, sung by Gérard Lesne, was the first Baroque recording that I listened to when I was at school. At the time I was playing the organ and singing baritone in the choir in my home town and was very much into sacred music. It was love at first sight – both with with Lesne’s countertenor voice and with French Baroque music – and gave me the idea that this might be the artistic path that I’d take in life.
