As far as our voracious 24/7 news media is concerned, August is a dead month. The Silly Season, they call it – with more than a hint of a sneer. Schools have broken up. Parliament is shut for the summer. The Prime Minister, the Cabinet, the TV anchors and the nation’s makers and shakers relocate from London to villas in France and Tuscany.
There is very little ‘real news’ during the Silly Season. Instead, bulletins and papers are filled with daft stories
