MOSCOW — The Moscow Bears took both games over the Lakeland Hawks of Rathdrum — 7-6 and 8-1 — in a 5A Inland Empire League baseball twinbill Tuesday.

In the first game, Moscow’s Will Hartig hit a double on a line drive to center field and scored Tyson Izzo to pull out a victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.

In Game 2, Dan Fitt had a triple and led the Bears (12-6, 7-3) with four RBI while Sam Rigney pitched five innings of scoreless ball.

TROY — A day after Troy dealt Kendrick its first defeat of the season, visiting Potlatch gave the Trojans their first 2A Whitepine League loss with three multi-run innings.

Waylan Marshall slapped a three-run triple in the sixth inning to put Potlatch up 8-0. Mason Woolverton singled four times and scored twice and starting pitcher Jameson Morris struck out 10 in six one-run frames.

Troy’s Makhi Durrett was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.

Potlatch (9-1, 6-0), Troy (5-3, 3-1) and Kendrick all sit within a game of each other in the league standings with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Kaci Kiblen and Sammy Pfiffner had three hits apiece for the Bears (4-10, 1-7) in their narrow Game 1 loss, with Kiblen batting in five and Pfiffner three.

In Game 2, Hannah Robertson had four hits, including three doubles, and totaled six RBI for Moscow. Alazne Espy had two hits, including a home run, and drove in four runs. Pfiffner also had four RBI on three hits, including a double.

Vanderwall’s two-run double was part of a seven-run fourth inning which saw Grangeville (7-8, 4-2) flip the score from a two-run deficit to a five-run lead.

The host Maniacs did not quit, as catcher Rilee Diffin posted a 4-for-5 showing that included a home run to help Orofino (10-3, 7-2) crawl within one of Grangeville in the sixth. Sady Olive tallied three hits and Livia Johnson hit a solo home run to join five Orofino batters with multiple hits. Madalyn Green and Adalei Lefebvre did their part with three hits apiece to keep Grangeville on top.

The visiting Loggers split a doubleheader with Lewiston’s junior varsity team, narrowly dropping the opener before winning by mercy rule in the nightcap.

In Game 1, the host JV Bengals scored multiple runs in three out of the first four innings while Potlatch kept pace, using a four-run fourth frame to take a 7-6 lead. Brilan Luthy delivered the walk-off single in the bottom of the fifth for Lewiston JV (9-3).

The Loggers (7-1) ran away with Game 2, scoring five runs in the first and four in the fourth. Elena Vowels hit safely four times and three in Game 2 and Maddie Smith struck out five over four frames.

The host Bantams started strong and withstood a rally from the Deer Park Stags to prevail in a 2A Greater Spokane League encounter which saw four of its five total goals scored on penalty kicks.

Tyler Schnatterle notched the first two Clarkston goals off penalty kicks before Connor Schnatterle ran the score up to 3-0 off an assist from Riley LaPlante, all within the first half-hour of play. The Stags (4-5, 3-4) came back with two penalty kick scores of their own, but the Bantams (3-7, 2-5) prevented them from tying things up with the help of “some standout saves” by goalkeeper James LeBret, according to coach Corinne Richert.

The result avenged a 4-1 defeat Clarkston had suffered to Deer Park earlier in the season.

PULLMAN — The unbeaten Greyhounds “weathered a little bit of a storm” in the opening 12 minutes, according to Pullman coach Doug Winchell, and ultimately racked up three second-half goals to beat North Central of Spokane in a 2A Greater Spokane League contest.

Clarens Dollin was responsible for the Hounds’ first and third goals despite spending much of the match double or triple-teamed. Dollin headed a corner kick into the net in the 57th minute and took a pass in space from Owen Shulenberger for the score in the 74th.

Marcelo Romero cashed in on an Isaiah Bischoff assist in the 60th minute and goalkeeper Milo Wexler made a pair of saves for Pullman (11-0, 7-0).

“They stayed the course, and then the goals came,” Winchell said.

RATHDRUM, Idaho — The Bengals remained perfect in 5A Inland Empire League competition with a team dual win over the host Hawks of Rathdrum.

Lewiston’s top mixed doubles duo of Brennan Rice and Alexis Keller, which has been dominant all season, was “very, very strong at the net,” according to coach Sandi Stocks, and provided the team’s most emphatic win in a 6-0, 6-1 showing. In what Stocks called the “highlight match of the day,” the first-time pairing of Taylor Musser and Eden Reed came through a seesaw girls No. 2 doubles battle to prevail 7-6 (3), 3-6, 10-7 for the Bengals (5-2, 3-0).

Hounds first at home

PULLMAN — The Greyhounds finished first out of seven teams and Pullman’s Trae Fredrickson posted the best score of the day at their home Greater Spokane League meet hosted at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

Fredrickson was the lone individual to shoot under par with a 71. Parker Legreid placed second with a 72 to set up Pullman for a 300 (12-over-par) team score.

Bengals beat Bears in IEL dual

Lewiston emerged triumphant in team scoring on both the boys and girls sides of a 5A Inland Empire League dual meet with visiting Moscow at the P1FCU Sports Complex.

The Bengals fielded the first-place finisher in 12 of 16 boys events, with Brandon Brower (100-, 200-meter dash), Trip Eckert (110, 300 hurdles) and Deegan Everett (pole vault, triple jump) each providing two of those wins. The Bears found success in the middle-and-long distance events, sweeping the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 — the latter two headed up by Ethan Fenley.

Girls competition was closer, but two event wins apiece from Avery Lathen (100, 200), Addisyn Storm (1,600, 3,200) and Mara Kessinger (discus, javelin) helped the hosts carry the day. Moscow sophomore Mattea Nuhn, who is the defending state champion in the event, contested and won her first 100 hurdles race of the season.

Knights, Loggers log victories

TROY — The Logos Knights of Moscow edged out the host Trojans for the team title on the boys side while the Potlatch Loggers overcame Logos for the top spot in girls competition at the Troy Meet.

In the most dramatic race of the day, the Knights’ 800-meter relay lineup of Justice Mallery, Jesiah Brower, Max Hawthorne and Dominic Porras bested Kendrick’s Orion Stewart, Landon Sneve, Cade Silflow and Malaki Jonasson by one hundredth of a second, finishing in 1 minute, 37.03 seconds to the Tigers’ 1:37.04.

Kathryn Burnette led the Logger girls with a pair of massive throwing victories, delivering a shot put mark of 42 feet, 2 inches that was more than 10 feet ahead of the next finisher and a discus heave of 111-2 that was first by nearly 25 feet.

Pirates, Kubs prevail

COTTONWOOD — The host Pirates of Cottonwood were dominant victors on the girls side while Kamiah prevailed in boys team scoring at the 11-team Prairie Meet.

Prairie fielded the first-place finisher in 14 of 19 girls events held. Sage Elven swept the three girls throwing events for the Pirates, while teammate Sydney Shears won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs and closed out a first-place 1,600 relay, with Aubree Rehder, Avery Rehder and Mia Anderson providing the first three legs.

Dylan Uhlenkott (100, 200) and David Kludt (300 hurdles, discus) each won two events to help the Kubs capture the overall boys title.

Vikings vie for league glory

SPOKANE VALLEY — Garfield-Palouse took second in team scoring from a 14-school field on the boys side and fourth in girls competition in the District 6 1B League meet held at Valley Christian School.

Brendan Snekvik won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10 minutes, 6.69 seconds for the Gar-Pal boys, and he and twin brother Kieran made runner-up showings in the 800 and 1,600, respectively. The two (along with compatriots Isaiah Hightree and Liam Cook) ran legs of a second-place 1,600 relay, while the Vikings’ 400 relay of Ayden Bassler, Sean Hallan, Relic Dan and Nicholas Meeuwsen also came in second. Cook was runner-up in the discus.

Gar-Pal’s Kyra Brantner won the girls 200 in a time of 27.22 seconds and anchored a first-place 800 relay finish. Teammates HettyLee Laughary, Elena Flansburg and Courage Hightree providing the first three legs of the victorious relay, which clocked in at 1:55.65.

Pirates reach heights in league meet

POMEROY — The host Pirates excelled in jumping and pole vault events, tying for first place overall on the boys side and taking third in girls team scoring at the District 6 Southeast 1B League meet held at Lybecker Field.

Levi Bowen of Pomeroy titled in the boys high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 8 inches and the pole vault with an 11-6 showing. Teammate Robby Van Vogt took first in the triple jump with a 36-0 performance. As a team, the Pirates tallied 104.5 points, tying with St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse for first from the six-school field.

In girls competition, Carmen Fruh maintained the Pirates’ vaulting dominance with an 8-6, while Tatum Jones won the triple jump with a personal record distance of 26-10. Pomeroy was third in team scoring with a total of 103.33, trailing Walla Walla Valley Academy and SJEL.

Knights contend at Co-ed Relays

POST FALLS — On a day which saw their teammates excel at the Troy Meet, several athletes from Logos of Moscow competed and posted event victories in the Christina Finney Co-ed Relays meet at Post Falls High School.

The Knights’ Chloe Jankovic won the girls 400-meter run with a personal record time of 59.27 seconds and clocked in at 2:22.59 to win the 800 as well. Logos’ Ryan Daniels and Seamus Wilson won the boys 300 hurdles and 800 with PRs of 41.46 and 2:00.04, respectively.

In team scoring, Logos tied for fourth on the girls side and took fifth among boys from a 12-team field consisting primarily of significantly larger-division schools.

Bulldog boys top league field

COLFAX — The host Bulldogs won convincingly in boys team scoring while Asotin took second on the girls side in a four-team Northeast 2B League meet.

Zachary Cooper led the Colfax boys with three individual event wins. He topped the pole vault with a mark of 14 feet even — two-and-a-half feet better than runner-up and teammate Matthew Morgan. He also won the 100- and 200-meter sprints, beating Brody Boness of Lind-Ritzville/Sprague by less than a hundredth-of-a-second in the latter, as both clocked in at 23.47 seconds.

Hannah Appleford’s dominant throwing performance highlighted the day for the Asotin girls. She won the shot put with a distance of 35-0 1/2 that was nearly five feet ahead of runner-up and fellow Panther Jordan Olerich and the discus with a mark of 106-3 that was more than 13 feet ahead of second-place finisher Dory Doty of Colfax.

The Colfax boys totaled 192.5 points to outstrip second-place team finisher Northwest Christian of Colbert at 118. The Asotin girls’ 161 points were 56 shy of Northwest Christian’s 217.

WOMEN’S COLLEGE GOLF

Idaho sixth at Big Sky Championship

LITCHFIELD GOLF, Ariz. — Led by Zoe Newell at 22nd among individuals with an 8-over par total, the Vandals are tied for sixth in team scoring after the second round of the Big Sky Conference Championship meet.

Idaho has a score of 31-over, knotted up with Northern Colorado. Sacramento State currently has the lead over all other teams with a score of 1-under.

Emma Heyman and Jenna Bruggerman are tied at 25th place with a score of 9-over.

Vandals falls short in Battle for Idaho

BOISE — The Vandals fell to Boise State 844-851 in the Battle for Idaho dual meet at Hillcrest Country Club.

Boise State’s Cole Rueck was the best overall golfer with a 208, while Idaho’s Samuel Johnson turned in a 211 to finish second. The Vandals were boosted by Josh McCartain’s 212 in a three-way tie with two Broncos for third.
