Alex Welch

Writer

Alex is a writer and critic who has been writing about and reviewing movies and TV at Digital Trends since 2022. He was previously the Managing Editor at TV by the Numbers (before it sadly shut down in 2020) and has held past staff writer and critic positions at Inverse, Looper, Primetimer, IGN, Screen Rant, and A.frame, the official digital magazine of the Academy. Over the 10+ years he has spent writing about movies and television, he has extensively covered just about everything. By everything, he means everything, too, whether it be obscure Marvel Cinematic Universe lore or past Oscars winners.

He fell in love with movies when he was five years old and his mother took him on a school night to his first-ever midnight screening of a movie. He discovered as the credits were rolling that night that movies were actually written and directed by real people! The rest is history. Through it all, he has maintained a deep passion for smaller, intimate dramas, thrillers, and horror movies, and he loves almost nothing more than getting lost in the shadowy world of a good noir or detective film.

Alex's favorite movies include Rear Window, Lost in Translation, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Chungking Express, Columbus, Cure, The Apartment, Mulholland Drive, The Handmaiden, and basically anything directed by Sofia Coppola, Paul Thomas Anderson, Michael Mann, John Ford, Wong Kar-wai, and Hirokazu Kore-eda. For fans of the smaller screen, his favorite TV shows are Mad Men, The Leftovers, and Station Eleven.

As a journalist, he has been a correspondent at the Academy Awards and attended both D23 and San Diego Comic-Con multiple times. He has spoken to some of the most revered filmmakers and actors in the world, including Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Willem Dafoe, Jeffrey Wright, Barry Jenkins, Michael Mann, Yorgos Lanthimos, Christopher Nolan, and Park Chan-wook. He is based in Los Angeles. When he isn't working, Alex is usually replaying Ghost of Tsushima, rereading his favorite Kurt Vonnegut books, doing the NYT crossword, or going through one of his yearly phases where he listens to too much Taylor Swift. He is always on the lookout for a new diner or coffeeshop, and he dreams of one day being in the Criterion Closet.
